Identify the statistical tests used to analyze the data in the study. Are there other statistical analysis methods that would have been more appropriate? If so, identify them and discuss. Describe the limitations of the study. Identify and describe any factors that may have affected the results of the study. Can the results of the study be applied, and if so, to whom? How could results of the study impact healthcare practices? Explain and discuss. Hansen, L. O., Williams, M. V., & Singer, S. J. (2011). For data gathering, the PSCHO survey used 45 objects. To apply a rating from strongly agree to strongly disagree, a 5-point Likert scale was used (Hansen, Williams & Singer, 2011). What makes this a successful study to use is that the 12 key variables in the safety environment are analyzed with respect to the readmission rates of the hospital. The use of this statistical test gave them the data needed to determine which of their theories is accurate. SNHU IHP 430 Mod 6 Descriptive Statistics & Multiple Regression Discussion They only solidified their theory with the use of multiple regression models. The size and location that were used are the limitations that were most present in this analysis. The hospitals chosen were mainly non-teaching and received lower scores from doctors and senior management. As a result, these categories were over-sampled. They also looked only at heart failure, pneumonia, and acute myocardial infarctions and did not have details on one or more of the classifications in some hospitals. The consequence was that the information obtained from the hospitals was distorted. The scale and location of the hospitals studied were potential factors that may have influenced the findings. Other healthcare facilities and hospitals may have opportunities to recognize their own disadvantages by using the data gathered. They will be able to identify if there are any underlying problems that can lead to readmissions. This will help minimize the cost of rehospitalization not only to the patient but the hospital as well ensuring that they provide their patients with the standard of treatment required. The partakers in the study groups distinguished risk of falls and rationale to engage in falls prevention strategies before and immediately after receiving the education. Participants’ levels of awareness about and perceptions to receiving the education were summarized using descriptive statistics (number, percentage) (Hill, Etherton_Beer & Haines, 2013). Logistic regression is used in comparing the confidence levels within the two groups. The differences between groups of the proportions of participants engaging in falls prevention strategies (health behaviors) after discharge was evaluated using logistic regression with adjustment for length of observation after discharge and baseline values of these variables, and results presented as adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals (Cl) (Hill, Etherton-Beer & Haines, 2013). SNHU IHP 430 Mod 6 Descriptive Statistics & Multiple Regression Discussion The usage of the data was to show that awareness and preventing behaviors helps in thwarting discharged patients falling via the control and more educated group along with showing what the variance between the groups is after having different knowledge told to them. Using this method along with appropriate testing, makes sense in this study’s case. Logistic regression is capable of clearing out any data that is not needed for the study, so the accuracy of the study is better off. The researchers were careful when considering the variables that affect the potential outcomes of the research. The results of this study aid healthcare organizations knowing how to properly educate their patients, especially the elderly, with proper discharge after-care to prevent mishaps. This tailored education was received positively by older people resulted in increased engagement in falls prevention strategies after discharge and is feasible to deliver to older hospital patients (Hill, Etherton-Beer & Haines, 2013). More education means less readmittance to the organization, safer for the patient and better off for the organization. References: Hill, A., Etherton-Beer, C., & Haines, T.P. (2013). Then I think that I am also informing others, you my classmates, with how your military and your tax paying dollars are being used in this way. Benchmarking tools are an important way of comparing your organization with other organizations as well as your internal organizations. How thing could be improved based on the utilization and data collected in these tools. The US Army uses risk management and describes it as the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling risks arising from operational factors and making decisions that balance risk cost with mission benefits (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2014). One of the main ways the Army creates a culture of safety is by the utilization of a survey tool call the Army Readiness Assessment Program (ARAP) Survey. ARAP is a Web-based initiative that provides battalion-level commanders with data on their formation’s readiness posture through five segments: Process Auditing – Assesses the processes used to identify hazards and correct problems Reward Systems – Assesses the unit’s program of rewards and discipline to reinforce proper behavior and correct risky actions Quality Control – Places emphasis on high standards of performance Risk Management – Assesses the health of unit processes Command and Control – Assesses leadership, communication, and policies as they relate to Risk Management (RM) Following the survey administration (the assessment phase), the commander receives one-on-one feedback on key issues regarding command climate, safety culture, resource availability, workload, estimated success of certain safety intervention programs, and other factors relating to their unit’s overall readiness (Headquarters, Department of the Army, 2021). SNHU IHP 430 Mod 6 Descriptive Statistics & Multiple Regression Discussion Using this survey, those within an organization can answer without fear of reprisal due to the survey being anonymous. The Army as a whole tracks which organizations are in compliance and have conducted the surveys. The Army also uses the data to compare against other organizations to see what can be shared as lessons learned to improve things across all organizations. The downfall with this survey is much like reviews on yelp, most people are eager to complain about things that are going wrong but not as motivated about things going right, so the survey is normally skewed to the negative. The survey is not mandatory and must be conducted by at least 60 percent of an organization to be considered valid. References Headquarters, Department of the Army. (2014, April). Adjust automatic marking as read setting Benchmarking is commonly seen as a process of comparing an organization’s processes and outcomes against those of other organizations. Benchmarking is a shorthand and ongoing method of improvement that does not require an organization to discover better ways of doing things or reinvent practices already in use by others (Ross, 2014 ,p.512). When looking to choose a benchmarking tool, there are four options: • Internal- Easiest, comparison of one department or division with another • Industry- Comparison against industry performance • Competitive- Comparison against rival • Functional- Identification and comparison against a recognized leader in performance of a process; may not be in the same industry Given that the primary goal of benchmarking is self-assessment, a healthcare organization can assess whether they have a strong safety culture, or whether it is a laissez-faire culture. The healthcare organization should ask themselves are they performing effectively and efficiently in creating a positive safety culture. Is their current safety culture meeting the standards of providing patients with safe and quality care? If a healthcare organization compares themselves internally, against the industry and their competitor and they come out on top, the short comings of others will push staff to continue to operate at a high-level of excellence in patient safety. Team effectiveness is the capacity a team has to accomplish the goals or objectives administered by authorized personnel or the organization (Wikipedia, 2021). In order to provide and contribute to high-quality care and the safety culture of the healthcare organization, departments and teams must be effective. SNHU IHP 430 Mod 6 Descriptive Statistics & Multiple Regression Discussion A lack of team effectiveness will cause a breakdown of the organization on all levels and will affect patient care. Patient safety experts agree that communication and teamwork skills are essential for providing quality health care. When all clinical and nonclinical staff collaborate effectively, health care teams can improve patient outcomes, prevent medical errors, improve efficiency and increase patient satisfaction (Bhatt, D.O. & Swick, R.N., 2017).
