Nurse burnout is the state of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion of the nurse due to the amount or nature. Nurse burnout falls under the category of leadership. The hospital management and leadership are in charge of scheduling and the quality of work, which are causative factors of nurse burnout. They arrange the schedules for the nurses and determine how long they work. They are also responsible for the number of nurses they hire at particular times, dependent on the hospital (Mudallal et al., 2017). The leadership is also responsible for the determination of the most appropriate methods to prevent burnout. They can arrange for relaxation techniques or stressrelieving exercises within the hospital to ensure the nurses do not go down the road of exhaustion. When the hospital leadership, especially the nurse leaders, fails to consider these, they expose the nurses to burnout, leading to adverse patient outcomes. This may even lead to their consideration of leaving the workforce, and it is known as burnout. Nursing is one of the fields that contend with this problem. There is an overall shortage of available openings in nursing schools, even though nurses are in high demand. This has led to a deficiency in supply. The nurses, in turn, have loads of patients to look after, a lot of paperwork to complete, and a general influx of tasks causing burnout (Manzano-Garc?´a & Ayala, 2017). A simple definition of nurse burnout is that it is a physical, mental, and emotional state caused by prolonged overwork and the constant absence of job satisfaction or fulfillment. If exhaustion goes untreated, it may lead to clinical depression of the nurses, which is adversarial for personal, career, and patient outcomes. Thus, this area warrants exploration to determine the best solutions for nurse burnout. Several work-related and individual issues contribute to nursing burnout. It is essential to focus on the environment that nurses work within. They deal with deaths regularly. Since they are human beings, this may take an emotional toll on them as they lose patients that they perhaps thought would be getting better. They also see the grieving family members, but they have to carry on with their work and assume that these experiences are just part of their jobs. This emotional strain is especially more rampant for the nurses working in emergency and oncology departments. The stress of these emergency departments makes them more susceptible to burnout symptoms. Discussion: Capstone Change Project The oncology nurses form relationships with them, and it becomes hard when they see the patients suffering, and some of them eventually die (White & Mc Gugh, 2019). Further, nurses work for long shifts that sometimes may even extend beyond 12 hours. This causes a lot of exhaustion mentally and physically. On the personal causes of burnout, there NURSE BURNOUT 3 is the recognition that nurses have to work in collaborative environments. This means that they have lesser chances of independent decision making. They are also under constant pressure to meet societal expectations (Monsalve-Reyes et al., 2018). Most nurses enter the profession with the hope of helping others. They feel as if they owe the society that. Therefore, when this fails to happen due to varied and uncontrollable reasons, the nurses may feel responsible or take the failure personally (Van Bogaert et al., 2017). These factors may lead to a high level of mental exhaustion that eventually translates to nurse burnout. There is a myriad of effects of burnout on nurses. These include the adverse impact that it has on the nurse’s wellbeing. Nurses who suffer from burnout may dread work, get depressed, and experience instances of insomnia. The nurses may also disengage from the patients as they get compassion fatigue (Oliveira et al., 2019). This means that there will be reduced positive interactions between the nurses, patients, and their family reducing the levels of satisfaction (Holdren et al., 2015). Burnout may also cause the nurses to be less careful when it comes to patient safety. They will suffer from emotional exhaustion and most likely be absent-minded when performing their tasks. The results are usually increased cases of careless infections among patients, which puts their wellbeing and safety at risk. This topic is significant to the world of nursing, as there is a need to have positive outcomes for patients. When the nurse is not in their right physical, emotional, and mental state, then positive results remain elusive goals. Many patients will continue to suffer, and there may be an overall decline in population health. Similarly, many nurses will continue to suffer, and America will keep losing out on one of its essential components in ensuring a healthy population (Hall et al., 2016). Discussion: Capstone Change Project The solution here is to have all stakeholders come together to ensure that they NURSE BURNOUT 4 strategize on ways to reduce burnout in nursing. Nurse leaders here have an essential role to play to ensure positive work environments (Mudallal et al., 2017). NURSE BURNOUT 5 References Hall, L.
