Discussion: General Chemistry Titrations Lab 5 Report Completed individually. In your discussion you should make a conclusion and then explain how your experimental results and observations support your conclusion. The points below should help you identify the information you have available from this experiment to support your conclusion. Submit completed lab report by the due date. Be sure to include: Based upon the introduction in your lab manual, what are you trying to find with your experiment? Based upon the purpose of your experiment, what claim can you make using your experimental evidence? Table(s) of your results. Include expected, experimental, and % error as appropriate. Discussion of your results. Explain how your experiment results support your claims. Identify possible sources of uncertainty and error in your measurements. Use evidence from your laboratory notebook to support your error analysis. Discuss how the direction of each source of error affects the results. Determine density of vinegar sample. a.) Weigh a 50 mL dry graduated cylinder on balance and record the mass obtained. b.) Fill the cylinder with 15ml of deionized water with a volumetric pipet and record the volume. c.) Weight it again and record the new mass. d.) Calculate the density using the mass of graduated cylinder + water and subtract the graduated cylinder mass. Divide this mass by the volume recorded. Answer should be about 0.997 g/mL. e.) Each student repeat steps a-d with vinegar. Standardization of sodium hydroxide solution with solid potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP). a.) Get 50 mL burette. b.) Fill a graduated cylinder with15mL 0.25 M NaOH solution c.) Fill burette completely with the of NaOH solution given and record the concentration d.) Using a balance, record mass of the potassium hydrogen phthalate. e.) Fill a 125L flask with 100mL of deionized water and mix with the KHP f.) Place magnetic stir bars in 50 mL beaker g.) Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein using a pipet, into the beaker with potassium hydrogen phthalate h.) Place burette onto stand and beaker on top of magnetic stir plate, underneath burette i.) Release 10 mL of NaOH into the 50 mL beaker and wait a moment to see if a change occurs j.) add 5mL at a time until you reach 25mL left k.) add 1 drop at a time, waiting between drops until the solution becomes pink for at least 10-15 seconds l.) Once solution has become light pink, stop titration, and record new volume of solution in the beaker. m.) Repeat steps a-l for a total of three trials Titration of vinegar sample Fill a 50 mL burette completely with the solution made in the previous step. b.) Rinse 125mL flask with deionized water c.) Add 10 mL of vinegar using a pipet to the 125mL flask. d.) Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein into flask with the vinegar solution e.) Place burette onto stand and beaker on top of magnetic stir plate, underneath burette f.) Release one drop at a time, of vinegar into 50 mL beaker g.) Once solution has become light pink, stop titration and record new volume of solution in beaker h.) Repeat steps a-g for each student in group to perform individually three times total. Waste Disposal Place both flasks under fume hood Turn fume hood on Mix both solutions into one flask. Use pH paper to test pH. If the color is red to yellow, add sodium bicarbonate until it stops fizzing. If the color is dark green to blue, add acid until it stops fizzing. Repeat until pH is near neutral and stops fizzing. Properly dispose all waste in container in the instructor’s fume hood. Discussion: General Chemistry Titrations Lab 5 Report References: PubChem.
