Reply to Jennie The behavioral approach focuses on what leaders actually do, how are they successful at garnering followers, and how were they perceived as leaders. Northhouse (2019) distinguishes the behavioral approach as to the ways leaders act and what they do; or the specific task and relationship behaviors that make a leader successful. Manion (2015) suggests that without positive healthy relationships, people skills, and trust; it is difficult to be an effective leader. What makes behavioral approaches effective is the leaders ability to use it as a framework to remind themselves that they have a direct impact on their followers. The relationship portion of the behavior approach encourage the followers through a combination of support, friendliness, motivation, caring, and overall comfortability they provide in various situations. One of the reasons the relationship behavior is so important is because relationship building encourages trust, communication, and teamwork. Henkel, Marion, and Bourdeau (2019) conclude that behavioral leadership styles used by managers in regards to project success require both relationship and task behaviors during different parts of the project; additionally relationship behavior works best where agile projects require a trusting environment to be successful. Discussion: Relationship behaviors that make a leader successful The situational approach to leadership is a timeless approach that suggests leaders will utilize different styles of leaderships depending upon the situation and adjust accordingly. This style suggests that there is no right style; but actually a combination of styles are appropriate at different times. Leaders effectively communicate and design strategies based on followers behaviors, the type of tasks, and functions that are to be performed. Walls (2019) defines situational leadership as a combination of relationship and task behaviors that offer the benefit of a combined strategy when appropriately applied to situational needs of the individual, team, or environment. Ultimately, situational leadership is a fluctuation between both directive and supportive roles that require the leader to adjust based on the followers abilities. Northhouse (2019) identifies the four styles as telling people what to do, selling which involved back and forth, participating which allows the follower to be more engaged in the decision, and delegating which is a hands off approach allowing the leader to step out of the decision making process. Additionally, it is suggested that leaders must match the style with the maturity of the follower or group to maximize success. Zigarmi and Roberts (2017) indicate that situational leadership theory identifies the styles of holding equal value when utilized as a way to enable and influence follower performance; but suggest that followers perform better in certain aspects such as intent to perform, cognitive trust, and positive and negative affect when the leaders situational style matched the followers. We find many examples of intentional situational leadership throughout the Bible; where Biblical characters are required to scrutinize and adjust their leadership ability for the situation. Jesus chose 12 men and developed them into the church’s first leaders. Within a few short years from this event, he would delegate the continuance of his kingdom to them (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). We know Jesus was able to efficiently analyze the situation and intentionally trains the twelve apostles which contributed to their followers. Jesus’ ability to adapt his leadership style is what made the difference in satisfying the apostles needs; he identified what they needed and he gave it to them. Merida, Platt, and Akin (2015) identify Jeroboam as a situational leader when he is punished b God for trying to arrest the man of God from Judah and when that doesn’t work he changes his tactic to that of false friendship by inviting him to dinner and to a reward. Jeroboam begins with a directive type approach and when that fails moves to a supporting role to try and capture the prophet. It certainly involves the use of power so that a leader can influence other employees to work according to him to achieve the set goals ( Shaver, 2012 ). The definitions of leadership usually form the bases for leadership theories ( Shepard, Farmer, & Counts, 1997 ). The topic of interest today is the behavioral approach and situational approach in leadership. Discussion: Relationship behaviors that make a leader successful Previously discussing the situational approach of leadership, as the name depicts that this approach of leadership is related to different situations a leader can face and how would he respond accordingly. Various situations demand different types of leadership and a person who adapts himself as per the required situation is called a true leader( McCleskey, 2014 ). On the other hand, leadership is seen with the behavioral approach ( Davis & Luthans, 1979 ). It deals with how the leader will behave or act. It is different from the trait approach because in the trait approach the main focus is on the capacity of the leader and in it, the emphasis is on how the leader behaves. This is very important in achieving the organizational tasks because a leader inspires his workers to achieve the aim by his doings and actions not by his personality. As I discussed before, the leader has to act differently in different nature of the situation. The main problem is identifying which leadership style is appropriate in a specific situation. Various methods are present to achieve the desired result or output and the most suitable method among them to push the employees to work efficiently for the change is the communicative method ( Wright, 2017 ) and is used by situational leaders habitually. The communicative method is of two types: one-way communication and two-way communication. As the situational approach consists of the behaviors of the leadership that how he behaves in a given condition. The one-way communication is mostly used in the Directive behavior of the leader, where the leader orders the employees to work as his orders to achieve a goal. On the other hand, two-way communication is used when the leader chooses the supportive behavior in achieving the goal where the suggestions are accepted from the employees to the leader and the employees can work with motivation in a satisfactory environment. The way a leader behaves in a situation makes him popular and significant in history. Just like Elijah who followed God’s order to remain firm and strong in believing no matter how the adverse the situation becomes ( Merida, 2015 ). Ohio state studies have a lot contributed to identifying the behaviors of leaders ( Schriesheim & Bird, 1979 ). They have found two types of behaviors by leaders in dealing with employees in different situations which are initiating behaviors and considerations behaviors. The initiating behaviors are applied by the leader when he sets the responsibilities of the workers, assigns them specific tasks, makes orders, etc and consideration behavior is used by the leader when he wants ti built a connection, faith, companionship and esteem between him and his followers. Discussion: Relationship behaviors that make a leader successful The behavioral and situational approaches of leadership are interrelated as the one-way communication method of situational approach. This is used in the initiating behavior of the leader in behavioral approaches and the two-way communication method of situational approach. The drawback of the behavioral approach is that its effect cannot be seen on results like workers’ motivation etc by the researchers and of situational analysis drawback is that there is not appropriate literature available to support this approach ( Northouse, 2019 ). In the bible, the behavior of a leader is brave and he must stand firm and strong in every difficult situation just like the example of Elijah I mentioned before. The leader in an organization must also be brave, accept every type of situation, handle every situation with bravery, strong nerves and must inspire his followers or workers to achieve the required goal, objective or change (Merida, T. 2015) .
