Discussion 2: The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy-Making
Word cloud generators have become popular tools for meetings and team-building events. Groups or teams are asked to use these applications to input words they feel best describe their team or their role. A “word cloud” is generated by the application that makes prominent the most-used terms, offering an image of the common thinking among participants of that role.
What types of words would you use to build a nursing word cloud? Empathetic, organized, hard-working, or advocatewould all certainly apply. Would you add policy-maker to your list? Do you think it would be a very prominent component of the word cloud?
Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation.
To Prepare:
Revisit the Congress.gov website provided in the Resources and consider the role of RNs and APRNs in policy-making.
Reflect on potential opportunities that may exist for RNs and APRNs to participate in the policy-making process.
By Day 3 of Week 8
Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy-making. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might make to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy-making. Be specific and provide examples.

Hi Kayla, I really enjoyed your post. Thank you. I agree with you that we as nurses forget we have a voice, not only in legislative policy, but also in organizational policy. Nurses need to learn to be more vocal when it comes to health policy. In advanced nursing education, you learn more about being involved in health policy. I believe that we as advanced educated nurses, should educate our colleagues on how they can become involved. Joining the American Nurses Association, ANA, in my opinion is one of the easiest ways to become involved in health policy. On the ANA website under Advocacy (n.d.) it states, “Nurses instinctively advocate for their patients, in their workplaces, and in their communities; but legislative and political advocacy is no less important to advancing the profession and patient care.” We as nurses are great advocators, we just need to ensure that we are also advocating for health policy.
In my research, I found that personal factors such as knowledge, family obligations, financial limitations, and lack of time were barriers to nurses participating in health policy advocacy (O’Rourke, Crawford, Morris, & Pulcini, 2017). You referenced in your post that financial limitations could be a reason for not joining the ANA. It is expensive to join the ANA, and someone who is not financially secure, may not be willing to spend that money. I think it is great that they offer scholarships for membership, I did not know this. I do believe that joining a professional organization is the best way to advocate for health policy. We can be heard in numbers.

I appreciated and enjoyed reading your post regarding strategies to influence policymakers. I want to add some comments about the approach of lobbying legislators.
A variety of professional organizations and education programs encourage nurses to participate actively in the legislative process and inform the importance of the activities. Participating in local or state level associations gives nurses and representatives of the organization higher chances to effectively influence on health policy or legislative bills that affecting the public health or nursing profession. With a good understanding of differences between lobbying and advocacy, nurses and APRNs can approach policymakers easier to influence the health issues that they are concerned about. According to Walter (1997), lobbying is often seen as practices that represent people’s interests, but advocacy means political activism that supports other people’s causes. For lobbying as credible representatives for a group, nurses and APRNs have to know thoroughly the positions of the organization as well as the relationship with other organizations related to the legislature (League of Women Voters, n.d.). Knowing the legislators of the local or state-level, including legislative records, political parties, general predispositions, or posting or interviews in social media, will determine the better outcome from any encounters with them. Nurses and APRNs are expected to anticipate the oppositions and prepare evidence-based answers through proper research and survey to predominate in the argument with them (League of Women Voters, n.d.). Nurses and APRNs can utilize a variety of methods to reach to policymakers and their office through telephone, letter, or email for a formal meeting or free conversion.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
