Emancipated Minor
I need to complete the peer response based on the student Main response written below. The peer response needs to be a minimum of 100 words. A minor in the State of Michigan between the ages of 16-18 are allowed to begin the process of emancipation from his or her parents. In Michigan, if the parents don’t agree to the petition of emancipation then the minor child has to prove that they can care for themselves. They must prove they can financially support themselves, handle their own personal affairs, and definitely understands what emancipation means. It’s not a simple task to get emancipated. Next, the minor must get an affidavit. It must come from someone the minor knows and someone who is involved in the child’s life and in the community. Examples: Physician, clergy member, family therapist, teacher, law enforcement, or a school counselor. An affidavit from them needs to explain that it would be best for the child to be emancipated. After the courts receive the petition, they now decide if they will grant it, or look into the petition more, decide if the minor needs a court-appointed lawyer or even if the parents might, or if maybe a hearing might be recommended. After all, is said and done, if the child is emancipated…the parents are no longer responsible for any debt, but this the crazy part, in Michigan, the parents are still obligated to support them.
