The intensity of the pain can be organized on a scale of 1 to 10. It is a subjective data collected at the assessment step in the nursing process. It is consider a subjective data because pain cannot be seen. Pain is often described as an unpleasant felling. A scale of 10 is the most pain, which causes the inability to function or move for an individual. The acute pain can be rated 9 on the pain scale of 1 to 10. The reason for the scales is that the patient has been experiencing pain for long hours and pain levels. Patient Description AW is a 22 year old male African American presents with pain complains that have lasted for eight hours, the onset of mid-abdominal pain. The continues throbbing pain for eight hours was diffuse and was prominent in the mid-abdomen. AW is oriented and in agony as he presents himself to the clinic. The patient does not shows any sign of shock or acutely unwellness. Patient stated that “pushing on to the abdomen and coughing exacerbate the pain, and get better when he just lay still”. The pain is localized around the belly bottom but Mr. W can not point at just one spot. The severity of his pain is a six in a scale of 1 to 10. Patient Care A focused assessment was implemented since patient denied any past medical history, injuries, allergies and is not currently on any medication. Patient’s appetite has decreased since the pain started . Patient laboratory results values are all within normal ranges. The Non pharmacological interventions that are used to alleviate pain depend on the inhibition of pain signaling. The non-pharmacological approaches are classified as; psychological interventions, acupuncture, acupressure, transcutaneous electrical nerve simulation and physical therapies. The physiological interventions include distraction, hypnosis, stress management, and other cognitive-behavioral interventions. The physical therapy involves massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, heat/cold, or chiropractic. The use of non-pharmacological pain management is used to complement the existing pharmacological therapy in dealing with some types of pain (Schug et al ., 2016). Physical therapy has different interventions that can be practiced to help the patient overcome acute mid-abdominal pain, like positioning and massage. The use of positioning helps in preventing further complications. In addition, it reduces the risk of developing injuries and, most importantly, reduces the alleviation of pain. Massage is a useful therapy in interrupting the patient cycle of distress and involves rubbing and kneading parts of the aching body. Mostly the areas that need massage are the joints and muscles or mid-abdominal parts.
