Use other reputable sources, such as local newspapers and regional reports to discover history and problematic issues those communities are dealing with such as high unemployment, hate crimes, pollution, drugs/alcohol, forest fires, lack of water, endangered species, etc… Your research will summarize the historical and modern issues while considering demographics, the local economy, and geographic features. Research the specific sites demographics using the census report (Mexican and US Census reports- links provided in the syllabus). Within the conclusion, demonstrate critical thought by showing that you have examined the area and its problems in detail by discussing possible solutions to the biggest problems. Last, talk about the next steps of the research by stating the specific problem you will concentrate on solving with your final design project.This research activity is designed for the students to take their knowledge from the readings, class and guest lectures, videos and personal interest and apply background research to a meaningful design project which personally interests them.
