News writing Assignment
You should have a strong lead paragraph. Your language should be clear, concise and to the point. You should avoid editorializing and stick to the facts. Write this in an inverted pyramid style with a summary lead and the most important information at the top of the story. Write your assignment as a 1.5 – 2 page, single spaced, news story. Your story should include: A traditional headline A dateline (see AP Style Book for guidelines) A strong, concise summary lead of no more than 35 words that both informs and creates interest An appropriate story style (inverted pyramid) Appropriate indirect, paraphrased and direct quotes Remember the hallmarks of writing for news: Short simple sentences and paragraphs Appropriate word choice Clear, concise and descriptive language Active voice Objectivity (all opinions attributed to a source) Yamiche’s remarks should be your primary source, but you’re welcome to use supporting material for background.
