NURS6521 Week 5: Endocrine System Disorders and the Treatment of Diabetes NURS6521 Week 5: Endocrine System Disorders and the Treatment of Diabetes week 5 discussion initial post COLLAPSE Diabetes and Drug Treatments – NURS6521 Week 5 Example Paper Diabetes affects many people in the world. It is a disease that affects blood glucose levels. There are different types of diabetes. There are many different medications available to treat diabetes. The purpose of this discussion is to discuss the different types of diabetes, a medication used to treat diabetes, and the short- and long-term effects of diabetes. NURS6521 Week 5: Endocrine System Disorders and the Treatment of Diabetes. ORDER NOW FOR CUSTOMIZED AND ORIGINAL ESSAY PAPERS Types of diabetes There are three main types of diabetes. Type 1 or juvenile, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes makes none or very little insulin and is usually diagnosed as a child or adolescent. The body’s immune system damages the insulin-producing beta cells that are stored in the pancreas. When the beta cells are destroyed the body is unable to produce insulin. (Osborn, 2008). Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes. Type 2 diabetes the body does not respond well to insulin and will lead to not making enough insulin. The body will try to compensate and make more insulin but is unable to effectively use it so glucose levels build up in the bloodstream (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Gestational diabetes causes an elevated glucose level during pregnancy (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2020). Glucose levels usually go back to normal shortly after the baby is born. All three types of diabetes can cause long term effects if left untreated. A drug used for treatment There are many different drugs available to treat diabetes. The drug I am going to discuss is Humalog insulin. Humalog insulin is a short-acting insulin that should be given within thirty- sixty minutes before eating. It is given subcutaneously, and the sites should be rotated after each injection to avoid irritation at the site (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2018). A person with type 1 diabetes should follow a healthy diet. Most people with type 1 diabetes are not overweight and should focus on maintaining their weight. Carbohydrates should come from a variety of food sources. A lot of times Humalog insulin is based on the glucose level and the number of carbs a person consumes. If this is how the dosage is calculated, then it would be given immediately after eating. Humalog insulin is usually prescribed three times a day with meals in type 1 diabetes. The unopened vial should be stored in the refrigerator and can be used up until the expiration date. The opened vial that is being used can be stored at room temperature (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2018). Short- and long-term impact on diabetes Diabetes can affect many different organs in the body. Short term effects of diabetes are that a person may experience hypo or hyperglycemia. Over time high glucose levels can cause damage to the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes, and the kidneys. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of cardiovascular problems. High glucose levels can injure the walls in the blood vessels causing numbness, tingling, and or pain in the feet or hands. This is known as neuropathy. Diabetes can damage the filtration center of the kidneys causing kidney failure or chronic kidney disease. Diabetes can also damage the blood vessels in the retina causing blindness. Over time if glucose levels are too high it can damage many different body systems. Conclusion Diabetes affects many people in the world. There are three main types of diabetes. There are many different medications used to treat diabetes. If diabetes is left untreated it can cause many problems to different organs in the body. People can be diagnosed with diabetes as a child or it can develop over time. Reference s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2020, March 11). Type 1 Diabetes. The Assignment The endocrine system includes eight major glands throughout the body which affect such things as growth and development, metabolism, sexual function, and mood (National Institutes of Health). Some of the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorders include hypothyroidism, diabetes, and Hashimoto’s disease. Not surprisingly, treating any one endocrine disorder may have effects on other body systems or their functions. As an advanced practice nurse, treating patients who may suffer from endocrine disorders requires an acute understanding of the structure and function of the endocrine system. Additionally, a solid understanding of patient factors and behaviors will assist in developing the best drug therapy plans possible to treat your patients. Some of most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorders include This week, you differentiate the types of diabetes and examine the impact of diabetes drugs on patients. You also evaluate alternative drug treatments and patient education strategies for diabetes management. Reference: National Institutes of Health. (n. d.). If left untreated, diabetic patients are at risk for several alterations, including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, neuropathy, and blindness. There are various methods for treating diabetes, many of which include some form of drug therapy. The type of diabetes as well as the patient’s behavior factors will impact treatment recommendations. For this Discussion, you compare types of diabetes, including drug treatments for type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes. Reference: American Diabetes Association. (2019). Statistics about diabetes. Retrieved from http://diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/statistics/ To Prepare Review the Resources for this module and reflect on differences between types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes. Select one type of diabetes to focus on for this Discussion. Consider one type of drug used to treat the type of diabetes you selected, including proper preparation and administration of this drug. Then, reflect on dietary considerations related to treatment. Think about the short-term and long-term impact of the diabetes you selected on patients, including effects of drug treatments. By Day 3 of Week 5 Post a brief explanation of the differences between the types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes. Describe one type of drug used to treat the type of diabetes you selected, including proper preparation and administration of this drug. Be sure to include dietary considerations related to treatment. Then, explain the short-term and long-term impact of this type of diabetes on patients. including effects of drug treatments. Be specific and provide examples. By Day 6 of Week 5 Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses and respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days who selected a different type of diabetes than you did. Provide recommendations for alternative drug treatments and patient education strategies for treatment and management.
