Old Age
Discussion 7 – Older Adulthood Preliminary Instructions (do this first then see instructions below on what to post): Using concepts from the course material to help guide you, create an interview that will help you get more insight into the issues facing Late Adulthood. Below are some samples of topics you may wish to explore: Ask people in Late Adulthood for their perspectives on aging, its challenges, what makes it successful, etc. Ask Kids, Teen, and/or Young Adults for their perceptions of people in Late Adulthood. Ask people in Late Adulthood for their perceptions on Kids/Teens/Young Adults today. Question people in late adulthood on the topic of integrity vs despair to see if their responses support the theory (or not). Ask people in Late Adulthood about stereotypes and discrimination they may have experienced as a result of their aging. Ask people of various cultures the way aging is viewed in their culture. Ask people in Late Adulthood for any words of wisdom they have for the younger generations. Intergenerational issues question both younger and older individuals on what they like about the other generation, what they learn from each other, what they enjoy doing together, etc. Ask people of different ages for their thoughts on dying (an alternative is to use people of various cultures). Ask those whove lost a loved one about their experience with the stages of grief and any strategies they used along the way. These are just a handful of examples, please feel free to select any topic or area that you are interested in that you feel relates to the material from the course. The more varied the topics the better the discussions! Interview as many people as you need to help you understand your topic, this can be one person or many; typically the more people you interview the more your conclusions are supported. If you only interview a small number of people make sure the interviews are in-depth and thorough. Likewise, ask as many questions as you need to get a thorough understanding of your topic, typically 5-10 questions, but this really depends on the subject you’re interested in. I’d suggest having a standard list of questions to ask each person ahead of time but if youd prefer to just have an open-ended conversation that can be effective as well. If you have any questions about topic choice or how to structure the interview, please feel free to ask me! Make sure you are following social distancing guidelines if you do an in-person interview, though there is no need to be face-to-face to complete this assignment, this can be done over Zoom/Facetime or with a phone call. Instructions Initial Discussion: Share the topic of your interview and what you were hoping to learn. State demographic info, ages, genders, number, etc. of those you interviewed (DO NOT USE THEIR REAL NAMES). Discuss your findings. What were the results of the interview? What was the conclusion you were able to draw about your topic? Connect your findings to the course material and apply the concepts as appropriate, be specific . Share what you learned from this experience and how you can apply the knowledge to your life, the lives of others, etc. ******************************* Put the course concepts in BOLD so they stand out.
