Moore argued that, regardless of the production of pleasure, beauty was still good. Many of you preferred to be beautiful even as your happiness remained unchanged. Many more preferred truth over a little happiness. Ross makes a similar thought experiment. Moore focuses on the production of the good, but Ross thinks there is more that is valuable apart from production. So, just like in Moore’s example, take two scenarios. In both scenarios, the same amount of good is produced (although which good might alter a little). In one scenario, you break a promise. In the other, you keep it. Is one better than the other? If production is equal so you opt to keep the promise, this means promise-keeping is inherently valuable. Does it matter if it’s a big promise or a little promise? Remember that regardless, it’s the same production of good. So, if you’re breaking a big promise, it’s for some other big result.
