Recent history has shown that the United States certainly has the power (i.e., the “might”) to go into any number of countries and stop human rights abuses, which are occurring in those countries. But having that ability begs the question of how far should the United States go in that role. Are we the world policeman? Are we the world’s peacekeeper? While the United States has unparalleled military power, should we engage without limits?

Based on your readings so far, and thinking about what Plato says in his dialogue with Thrasymachus, discuss the issue of when the ability to do something (the “is”) becomes the right thing to do (or the “ought”). It often helps to think in comparative terms. Think about an example that seems to be similar and use it to explain your points.

Imagine you are walking down a dark street one night and suddenly someone jumps out in front of you. He is brandishing a pistol and he says in a menacing voice, “Your money or your life.” From the look on his face, you know he is serious and the pistol in his hand is real.
