Management Theories In chapter 2, we learn about different management theories. For purposes of testing, I will distinguish between them as follows: Scientific, Administrative, Behavioral, Quantitative, Systems, or Contingency (see powerpoints.) I have created a scenario to show how several theories can be used together. Please read the overall scenario and then decide which part would fall under each of the theories. (Only one theory per part of the overall scenario.) You can identify the part of the scenario by the description in the parentheses. Once we have identified them, we will discuss in more detail. (Since there are so many of you, please don’t identify all at oncepick one and explain why. Then we will try to come up with more examples from your work experience.) Remember, the idea is to come in to the discussions more than once! A small business has grown over the years beyond what the owner can handle effectively. So, you’ve been brought in to manage the day-to-day business to free up the owners time for other matters. After spending a few weeks getting acclimated to the business, the employees, and the culture, you are ready to make some changes. 1. (Policies and Procedures) You notice a lack of policies and procedures. The owner explains that he always handled issues on a case by case basis. You get the feeling that this may have lead to unfair practices where “favorite” employees got preferred time off time or job assignments. Since the business (and number of employees) has grown over the years, you decide to put procedures and policies in place to handle employee matters. This way, employees will be treated fairly in all situations. 2. (Scripts and workstations) You develop scripts to ensure that employees are following the “one best way” to interact with customers. You also streamline the way the workstations are set up to eliminate wasted motions. 3. (Scheduling) You’ve noticed some problems with scheduling. Sometimes there isn’t enough work to keep a shift busy. To address these issues, you decide to start using computer software designed for scheduling. After the initial time involved in getting it set up, this new way of scheduling has reduced labor costs. 4. (Employee Picnic) You want to make the work more enjoyable and create opportunities for employees to become friendlier with one another. You decide to start by arranging an employee picnic. You’re getting started on those arrangements right away to take advantage of the nice weather. 5. (Decisions) You notice that some of the workers make decisions without considering how it impacts other parts of the business. This has caused problems when materials run out or not enough are scheduled. In one instance, a promotion was offered that discounted the product, but not enough product was in-stock to accommodate demand. You need to find a way to open communication so that this doesn’t continue to happen. 6. (Summer Hours) Your policies and procedures have come a long way to help the business. You will institute “Summer Hours” a policy that allows workers to leave early on Fridays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This policy will be great for morale. However, it can’t universally apply to everyone, because each department will need phone coverage through end of the workday on Friday. You will have to come up with an alternative plan for those workers.
