Our personal experiences with the education system shape our understanding of how it works, its value, etc. As sociologists, we use sociological perspectives to analyze the social world, not personal experience. Thus, this question asks you to use sociological theories to analyze a personal aspect of your life, education. What are the differences between functionalism and conflict theory? Then, discuss the differences in how a functionalist and conflict theorist would explain the PUBLIC education system (focus on K-12) in the United States. Avoid discussing private schools in your answer.
