A meta-paradigm normally summarizes the intellectual and the social mission of the nursing profession (McEwen, 2014). There are four meta-paradigms when it comes to the nursing profession. These includes: person, health, environment, and nursing. They are all important since they stand for different things. They should all work together so as to achieve the goal that is agreed upon. This paper explains how in my own philosophy I understand the meaning of the meta-paradigms. The four concepts of the nursing meta-paradigm The first meta-paradigm is the person, this normally refers to a human being but it goes further than that since a nurse has to put in consideration the psychological, physical as well as the intellectual genetic makeup of the person, and take into account that this person is the recipient of the nursing care and considering as a whole human being when providing care in order to successfully address the person health needs, respecting each person as unique and provide care free of biases (Branch et al., 2016). The next meta-paradigm is health. Health, in this case, refers to the ability to be able to operate normally in the middle of stressors and be able to cope with them as well. It also refers to having the calm which makes one be able to reach their full potential in life.When speaking about health, it doesn’t means only the absence of physical illness; but also mental, spiritual, psychological and emotional aspects of the individual(McEwen, & Wills, 2014). The third meta-paradigm is environment; this refers to the thing that surrounds a person and things that affect them. This includes the things that a person comes in contact with and that can influence them.The environmental aspect of an individual is as important as the medical PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING 3 treatment that a patient needs to received to cope with a disease. It is important to create a therapeutic environment in order to promote healing (Branch et al., 2016). The fourth meta-paradigm is nursing, which is very important when it comes to the patients. In my understanding, it is the care is given to a patient. Considering nursing as an art, science and practice which aims to restore, maintain and support the patient health through the nursing interventions, taking care of mind, body and soul as a whole. My Additions and Deletions to the Meta-paradigms The concept that I would add to the meta- paradigm is time. This is because it is very crucial in order for nurses have a good use of time management to provide patient care and address important health problems quickly to prevent further health complications, and if it is not done properly it can be detrimental. What I would delete from the meta-paradigms is the environment, this is because I find this the least important among the other three, if in need to delete one which in one way or the other they are the environment or the surrounding that is been referred to by the concept of environment. I consider that through nursing the factor environment is taking care as well, being this consideration making easy to me to delete environment. 4 PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING Conclusion The four meta-paradigms are all very important since they help to understand nursing profession better. However, I find the concept of a person carrying more weight than the others is that of person as the recipient and active participant of nursing care. If the person did not exist nursing would also not exist. It is a person who receives the care. My nursing philosophy has been unfolded through all the material and information learned and shared throughout the course.
