Romantic Landscape painting

Critique how artists transform landscapes into Romantic subjects. Define the style Romanticism and then choose works of art that represent the Romantic style of painting. Analyze the formal elements and message of the work and how the artist(s) capture romantic ideologies in the works that you chose. Include the ideas the landscapes embody and how artists represent those ideas. Use at least 3 examples in your answer. 2. Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion. Identify 3 works of art that represent the ideas of Manifest Destiny (define idea as well) and analyze how they visually represent these ideas and the promotion of moving westward. What were the historical factors that drove the movement, the effects and how artists captured this time period in painting and/or sculpture. 3. Compare and contrast Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Discuss at least 3 examples of works of art, highlighting why they are an example of each style. You must demonstrate that you understand the characteristics of each style. Include in your answer a discussion of content as well as how the visual/formal elements emphasize or are an example of that style and the message/content of the work of art you chose. 4. Rise of American Realism. Choose at least 3 Realist artists and discuss the political and social circumstances surrounding the creation of their works and how your examples (in terms of formal elements as well as content) illustrate the characteristics of American Realism.
