Option 1: Investigate the sexual harassment policy that exists at DMACC. This policy may be stated in the student handbook or some other official document published by the institution. Using at last 2 outside sources (these can include extra material included in the “Help!” section on Blackboard) and your textbook, write a 3-page paper answering the following questions: What is sexual harassment? What does it involve? Give an overview of the sexual harassment policy at DMACC. What do you think of the sexual harassment policy at DMACC? How does it compare to other institutions? What could DMACC as an institution do better to prevent sexual harassment from occurring? Be specific. Your work must show original, non-plagiarized college-level writing skills- meaning your paper should be written in essay format with an introduction, paragraphs beginning with topic sentences, and a conclusion while having also been proof-read for errors in spelling, grammar, and logic. Your journal should be a minimum of 3 pages (750 words), be formatted in 12 point times new roman font, have one-inch margins, be double-spaced, and include page numbers and a word count. Harassment Harassment is verbal or physical conduct or graphic display which is offensive or shows malice toward an individual because of his/her race, color, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity,national origin, age, disability, genetic information,or, to the extent covered by the law, veteran status. Examples of prohibited behavior include: Abuse that diminishes the dignity of an individual through insulting or degrading remarks or conduct such as racial or ethnic slurs, written or graphic material which shows malice or ridicule toward an individual or group, jokes which are demeaning to a racial or religious group or a particular national nationality or one’s gender. Threats, demands, or suggestions that an employee’s work status, a student’s academic progress, or an applicant’s employment opportunity is contingent upon his /her tolerance of or acquiescence to harassment. Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination that is prohibited. Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual or sexist nature when: Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment or education; or Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment or education decisions affecting such individual; or Such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work or educational performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working or educational environment. If an individual believes he/she is being harassed, he/she should make his/her objections known to the alleged harasser. If this fails to stop the objectionable behavior, or if the individual is not comfortable confronting the alleged harasser, he/she should bring the matter to the attention of the Academic Dean, Provost, or the Affirmative Action Officer.
