Sexual Reactive Behavior and Development
Identify a question of interest to you personally or professionally related to the course. The question can be related to any area of developmental psychology. It could be something that will be covered in the course directly or something more tangentially related. There are several examples of topics under the discussion forum. Example questions: What sort of special concerns might there be when dealing with a gifted child? What impact does care for a parent have on the sandwich generation? Additional topics are listed under the course discussions. *You must have your question approved by ASAP as this is a short class and I want you to have as much time working on it as possible. You can email the question directly through the course email function, or send a message to [email protected]. Papers are due on or by 8/21/20. Papers submitted after this date are subject to a 10 point deduction per day unless the student has made prior arrangements for an extension with me. The Answer (the paper!) You will need to find at least seven sources to help you to answer your question. Six of these sources must be PROFESSIONAL sources. That is, they must be directed toward professionals (rather than toward parents or the general public), and be research-based articles from academic journals. A good way to find articles is to go to the library resources web page http://staff.bcc.edu/library/ and go to EBSCOhost premier. The off-campus patron id is the barcode on the back of your student ID or your student library barcode. If you have any questions about this, please contact the BCC library at 609-894-9311. Then use this to conduct a search on your question. For example, Using the question: Are boys really better at math than girls? I use the search terms: gender and differences and math. I came up with 107 articles! Not all of these will be directly related but I found several in the first two pages of results, many of which we had in full text. There are suggested paper topics under the discussion tab – Paper Q&A Requirements for the paper Evaluation criteria for the paper: Format and length of the paper: 10 points The paper should be typed, double spaced, and include a title page with the question you are trying to answer as the title, your name, and the name of the college. You must also include a reference page with the list of your sources. Be sure to proofread your paper. Length: The paper should be 5 pages long (not including the title and reference page). Be sure you have made a solid attempt to answer your question. Use of appropriate sources (at least 7 sources, at least 6 of which are professional journal articles): 15 points (must-have reference page with sources listed in APA format — alphabetically). Introduction 10 points Identify your question; explain why it is worth answering. Also introduce your organizational strategy (e.g. how the rest of your paper is going to be laid out) (5 of these points come from turning in your question ahead of time) Body of the paper 50 points Using your seven sources, attempt to answer your question. Look at your sources, identify key themes, and then decide how to organize the body of your paper. For example, in my search for information about gender differences in math, I found articles pertaining to three themes: age-related trends in gender inequities in math performance, measurement issues in looking at gender inequities, and academic self-concept in gender inequities. I would then organize my paper by focusing on these three themes, one at a time. You must cite sources in the body of your paper. This is done in APA format and looks like this (author(s), year of publication). Discussion 15 points Summarize what you have found; what information is missing from the research that would better answer this question, what are the limitations of the research, what are the implications of the data you have found? IF YOU DO NOT CITE SOURCES IN THE TEXT OF YOUR PAPER YOU WILL LOSE 15 POINTS OFF THIS ASSIGNMENT OR IF APPROPRIATE THE PAPER WILL BE FAILED AT MY DISCRETION!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS If you need help with APA format, check this website: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ Please email me with any questions!!!!! There is no reason not to ask a question. I’d rather spend all weekend answering paper questions then mark points off due to simple mistakes!!!!! Please note that chapter or paper summaries will not be accepted. The goal of the paper is to show that you can acquire several data points (research papers), integrate the information, and present a well-balanced presentation. Always avoid “I” statements, any personal opinions or examples, and any paper that focuses on a mental health condition or concern needs to only focus on how it affected development (i.e socialization, education, occupation) and not the condition itself.
