One element that inspired me to pursue psychology is the need to help people. Once you observe society and the current living conditions, many people are living in sad situations. Some are forced by circumstances, while others made the wrong decisions in life. Numerous people are going through various difficult situations. I aim to ensure that people can get psychological help any time they need it and at an affordable rate by all. Suicide rates have been on the rise lately. This is associated with the fact that the community does not have people to guide others, especially the young generation (Jimenez, Sánchez, McMahon & Viola, 2016). The young generation needs a person who they can approach and help them settle the issues they have in their lives. Another personal goal in my career life is helping reducing suicide rates by ensuring that people can talk to someone who is readily available and who relates to their problems. Generally, the idea is to try and make life better for everyone. Community psychology entails assessing the community and all the aspects of the community. After analyzing the community aspects, it involves understanding what factors negatively affect the lives of the people and those that result in the community’s positive growth (Kagan, Burton, Duckett, Lawthom & Siddiquee, 2019). Therefore, the psychologists strived to know how improving the relationships between the people would result in better health for people. Community psychology tries to understand the relationships between people in the community and establish ways of making these relationships better. Numerous aspects may cause issues in the relationships between people in a community. Such issues in relationships affect the interactions between people and in some cases, the people end up in major disagreements. There have been incidents in communities where the people have ended up causing major injuries to each other based on their disagreements. Psychologists have attempted to penetrate into the communities with a bid to understand how to make people’s lives better and ensure that people live better lives with each other. Community psychology tries to understand how life is in terms of the quality of life between people, organizations, institutions and communities. The goal of community psychology is to make life’s quality better. Achieving a better life quality can be achieved through research and putting into action, what the research has gathered. The research is done with a goal of trying to understand human behavior, how the behavior varies from person to person and finally how the behavior may have an influence on the people’s interactions (Jason, Glantsman, O’Brien, & Ramian, 2019). If psychologists wish to ensure peaceful living of people in a community, they should strive to understand the human behavior of the people in this community and try to make it fit according to the expected standards. Community psychology has a future ahead of it based on different things. In previous years, people considered psychologists as being a luxury and not a necessity. People would hear of the term psychologists and would automatically think of mental health. However, this is not the case. Analyzing the records available on different communities, the number of issues affecting people in the community are immense. Some people have issues due to unemployment as they are struggling to make ends meet while others have issues, which are not as major. The communities have experienced a major change in how people interact with each other. All these changes are associated with the stresses that people may be dealing with in life. In marriages, there have been several issues associated with violence among the people. In some situations, the spouses come home drunk and end up inflicting physical harm to some of their family members without knowing. Once they get back to their senses, they realize the magnitude of their actions and try to make things right. For some of them, it is usually a bit late because the damage they have caused is usually irreversible. There have been several cases of parents injuring their children or injuring their spouses lately. The governments have understood the need for community psychologists in the societies. They have understood that life has become difficult for several people due to the issues they are experiencing in life (Evans, Duckett, Lawthom, & Kivell, 2017). Therefore, the governments have decided to have some community psychologists as government employees to guide the members of community on different issues of life. People need guidance in life and especially since life has become difficult due to the high prices of living. Therefore, as it stands, community psychology has a future that is busy and productive since they will be involved in activities to help mold the members of the communities. Community psychology has numerous key concepts that dictated the functioning of community psychology. These concepts form the basis of how community psychology ought to work. Firstly, there is the concept of empowerment. Empowerment is about giving the people some better knowledge on who they are and how they can make themselves better in society. With empowerment, people will understand where they belong in society and will make use of this information to make themselves better. Empowerment helps ensure that people do not fall into mental issues such as depression since they do not understand where they are going. Diseases affecting communities may have a negative impact on the people in the community. A community may have its people suffer from several diseases that may end up putting the people down. The concept of prevention and health promotion is one that I crucial since without good health, the people will not live comfortably. This component is meant to guide people on how they can protect themselves from different diseases affecting communities. Again, the people are guided on the best decisions they can make for their lives. People are advised by community psychologists on what practices to be involved in if they wish to enjoy great health. Activities such as exercising are highly encouraged since they ensure a person gets into good shape and avoids health issues. Thirdly, there is the component of community participation. The community psychologists deal with communities. The communities’ input is vital since the governing principles that will be put forward will concentrate on the community and not an individual. Getting insight from the people in community is important as it will help the people in society state what they wish to see. Some people governing communities do not seek the opinion of the people in the communities without understanding that the people in the communities are the ones experiencing the issues and hence should be consulted. Any community wishes to see its people enjoy a just world. Social justice is about ensuring that all people receive equal treatment. None of the people in the community ought to feel inferior. All should be treated equally and if any of the members treats another wrongly, they ought to receive sufficient punishment for their wrong deeds. The idea behind social justice in community psychology is to prevent issues that arise from unfair treatment of people. The idea behind social justice is to enhance equality of all people through equal treatment. Lastly, under community psychology, there is diversity. Diversity entails being broad in the sense of coverage. Any community usually has people from different backgrounds. If these people do not learn how to live together with each other, there will be constant conflict between the people. The world is presently struggling with people failing to understand how to live with each other despite their differences in background (Kagan, Burton, Duckett, Lawthom, & Siddiquee, 2019). People tend to be against empowerment in situations where they believe the empowerment will cause a threat on them or their work. An excellent example of this is on women empowerment. People are against women empowerment since they do not want to have the women take over the significant jobs of governance in the countries. The concept on health promotion and prevention is one that is readily agreed upon. All people in life wish to enjoy good health as no one wishes to suffer from any illness. Some practices are however difficult to eradicate from society such as drug use and this tend to cause issues on the users’ health. However, health is an issue that people agree on without much of a struggle. Community participation is a vital concept to the whole community psychology field. People believe that decisions about the community should be run through them since after all; the decisions made will affect them. Therefore, the concept of community participation is a concept that is one that people do not disagree on. Fourthly, social justice is a controversial concept. Matters related to justice of the people are controversial since they believe they have a way of doing things but the justice system has a different way of doing things. An excellent example of these issues is a case where a person needs some form of compensation by the government or people in charge. In some cases, there have been issues where the people in charge do not compensate people as they ought to and this may cause problems in community. News such as people demonstrating on the streets over lack of justice have been on the rise recently. These people demonstrate since they want some form of justice to prevail as they wish. Therefore, the concept of social justice causes many disagreements between people since people are not the same when it comes to compensatory issues and how the justice system should work. Diversity is the concept that has resulted in major disagreements between people in communities. People do not wish to live together on a fair platform with people from different backgrounds (Seedat, & Suffla, 2017). Race is the major cause of disagreement when it comes to diversity. People from some races are discriminated upon by others and deemed inferior. Getting a mutual ground for all people to agree on has been difficult when it comes to issues of diversity. This is a concept in community psychology that has proven to be difficult to deal with. COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY 7 In conclusion, the people in the communities perceive the concepts of community psychology differently. The people in leadership positions, for example, may not encourage community participation if they wish to be involved with some fishy business such as embezzlement of funds. The police may also step in to drive away people in community who are demonstrating for equal treatment. The police may not understand such a crowd and may believe they are causing commotion. Therefore, the different parties in the communities understand the concepts on community psychology differently.
