Criminal Event Research Paper outline- For this five-page research paper, students will investigate and provide characteristics of a specific criminal perpetrator, focusing on the individual responsible for the event and applying a learned criminological theory to their behavior. It is necessary that you integrate information you have been learning throughout the course into your final analysis of the criminal event. Ø  Criminal Ø  Type of crime Ø  Any disorders, (biological, psychological etc.) Ø  Social applications if any, (abused in lifetime, sexual or other) Ø  Society’s reaction to the crime or criminal, (despised, made into folk hero of sorts etc) Ø  Punishment received   The purpose of this paper is to 1. demonstrate an ability to apply a specific theory to the identified individual, taking into consideration the personal and social variables that contribute to criminality, and 2. demonstrate the ability to reference evidence-based research in order to provide supporting evidence for claims, i.e.: provide citations throughout your research.   List of Additional Acceptable Essay Topics for Criminology Research Paper: Papers from this list should also be associated with material covered in the course. Ø  Women in the criminal justice system, crime participation and entry and conditions of prison as opposed to males. Ø  Probation vs. Incarceration, (this may be done in a Pro/Con format) Ø  Acquaintance Rape or Date Rape.  Warning signs and red flags.  How these cases are perceived by public and courtrooms. (Consider the Routine Activities Theory) Ø  Paraphilias such as Pedophilia and others. Potential causes and treatments. Ø  What recent laws which may be considered controversial were passed by legislation thereby bypassing majority opinion? (Social contract) Ø  How do we use the outcomes of our theories to develop deterrent strategies?  Ø  Laws have 2 main objectives, to deter, and when that is unsuccessful, to enforce violations of behavior deemed to be legally unacceptable.  To determine the best way to deter we develop theories to understand criminal behavior.  One of your homework questions was to define a theory.   How do we use the outcomes of our theories to develop deterrent strategies?  How does research assist in developing policy and practice?    Research Paper Format: Typewritten using the preferred fonts; Times New Roman or Courier New 12 pt. (avoid using whimsical fonts as they are hard to read and have an unprofessional appearance). Use 1″ margins and double space document. Paper should include a separate cover sheet containing; Title, Student Name, Date, Course and Professor’s Name, and a separate sources page.  The textbook may be used as one source but at least two additional sources must be used.  Be sure to properly cite your source or sources with internal citations as well as source page.
