Considering the forces in the global environment , what might some of the implications of demographic forces be for the industry you work in? What are the advantages and disadvantages of technological change? How can information technology lead to beneficial changes within the workplace? Student Response: #1 TP Forces in the global environment can heavily impact our industry. Since the effect of trade reaches everyone and since markets are interlinked we are affected by gains and losses in multiple arenas. Our cost of business is affected when a barrel oil rises $1.50. It sends a ripple affect through our industry causing us to meet at the budget table to re-structure/re-negotiate certain cost associated with a project The advantages of technological change is an ever evolving event in our industry and is something I welcome being a former programmer. We are challenged to press forward to create new designs, measures, and processes which also creates new roles and a new talent pool. Disadvantages of technological change resulted in a shift of roles or the need to restructure the organizational chart. Many were shifted to roles outside of their comfort zone because they were no longer needed in their previous career fields. We moved to a more self-help approach thanks to technology. Once we migrated to a cloud based format it became more convenient to complete many administrative task on our own causing large administrative offices to downsize. The benefits of information technology increased the volume and speed of many of our processes including the ability to telecommute in a more secure environment. #2 DPI currently work in the public education system (elementary school) and can say that it has changed dramatically since the pandemic.Prior to last year, I (and many of my coworkers) was completely unfamiliar with Virtual Learning, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom and the like. When schools across the nation shut down last March, many educators had to step outside their comfort zones to begin teaching virtually with little or no software training. It was overwhelming to me in the beginning and our staff was inundated with email tips on teaching virtually or new software that could be installed and used for teachers’ virtual classes. Within a week or two, it became much more comfortable, and even enjoyable. It was exciting to connect with students or other teachers virtually. Several students were happy to share work that they had done and progress they had made while we were quarantined. It’s great that advances in technology made these video conferencing services readily available to us, but there were some drawbacks. Many students did not have devices available at their homes or the internet service to connect. Also, several of the parents and teachers lacked experience to trouble-shoot with compatibility or connection issues. Aside from virtual teaching, technology is helping to prepare kids for jobs of the future. By fifth grade, most students already know how to type constructed responses in a Word document, research various topics on the internet and even make a simple Powerpoint presentation for class. Furthermore, there are several platforms used on a regular class basis for continued student learning or intervention purposes. These computer skills will expand in years to come and help make students more savvy and better prepared once they reach the workplace.
