Copy of Previous Assignment : According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1.5 million people in the United States get Sepsis each year. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that develops from the body’s response to infection. Sepsis is classified as a medical emergency and is deadly without timely treatment, which can lead to rapid tissue damage, organ failure and death. It is not easy to diagnose because it can mimic many other conditions. Florence Nightingale was the first nursing theorist that addressed germ issues in her Environment Theory. In this theory she concluded that cleanliness, sanitation, fresh air, comfort, and socialization are necessary for healing (McEwen & Willis, 2014). Nurses and all healthcare providers play a role in the treatment of Sepsis through prevention, education, implementing treatment per their facility’s policy and protocols. The first and major line of defense from Sepsis is prevention and infection control. Hand hygiene is the best defense against infection and the spread of infection. Another preventative measure is to recommend vaccines such as the flu, meningitis and pneumococcal. Education plays a key role in early recognition and treatment. We need to know the signs and symptoms of Sepsis to ensure prompt treatment. Nurses and physicians should ensure that proper diagnostic tests and pan cultures are ordered to determine if an infection is present, where, and the cause. Intravenous fluids and antibiotics should be started immediately. Patient progress should be checked frequently, and reassessment of antibiotic therapy should be done within 24 to 48 hours to stop or adjust therapy as needed. Proper documentation of all interventions, tests, and treatments is also required. The patient is the focus of the Environment Theory and the Nurse performs task to control the environment to improve recovery. Nightingale believed that a healthy environment was key to healing and cleanliness would prevent mortality. References McEwen, M., Wills, Evelyn. (2014). Theoretical Basis for Nursing Fourth Edition.
