Details:
Throughout the RN-to-BSN program, students are required to participate in scholarly activities outside of clinical practice or professional practice. Examples of scholarly activities include attending conferences, seminars, journal club, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, interdisciplinary committees, quality improvement committees, and any other opportunities available at your site, within your community, or nationally.
You are required to post one scholarly activity while you are in the BSN program, which should be documented by the end of this course. In addition to this submission, you are required to be involved and contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives on a regular basis.
Submit, as the assignment, a summary report of the scholarly activity, including who, what, where, when and any relevant take-home points. Include the appropriate program competencies associated with the scholarly activity as well as future professional goals related to this activity.
You may use the “Scholarly Activity Summary” resource to help guide this assignment.
While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
Scholarly Activity Summary: Healthcare Associated Infections
Overview
When I was undertaking my BSN program, I attended a scholarly activity that essentially examined the healthcare associated infections, otherwise referred to as the HAI. According to research, healthcare associated infections are amongst the most dangerous public health issues that the medical world currently grapples with. In this seminar, the entire healthcare professionals from doctors to nurses to other supporting staff participated wherein the emerging issues and the current state of efforts to combat the matter were comprehensively presented by the organizers. As a future nurse, the event was beneficial to me in multifaceted ways. For instance, I learnt about the need to give priority to sterilization and disinfection techniques in our public hospital and the manner in which to conduct them effectively. Also, the seminar allowed me to augment he theoretical knowledge that I had acquired in class with the firs-hand experience of experienced doctors, and nurses who presented. Further, there was a presentation regarding the mortality and morbidity rates due to the HAIs that allowed me to gain the statistical knowledge concerning the matter, underpinning the severity of the HAI situation in our public hospitals.
Problem
At least 7% at minimum and 10% at maximum of sick persons worldwide who get admitted to acute care sections in hospital set-ups acquire HAIs (Fracaro, Sicking, Voorhees, & Kanopy, 2016). The HAIs expose patients to extra morbidity and mortality risks. The above statistics possess a big problem to various nations. The existence of such levels of HAIs stretches the already limited resources of not only hospitals but countries as well (Dixon & CDC, 2011). Therefore, the participation of a SNP prepared nurse in such activity is paramount as it has immense benefit. Through such a seminar, a nurse acquires knowledge that may help them institute measures that may reduce the occurrence of the healthcare-associated infection, which may reduce the mortality and morbidity rates associated with it. Therefore, the seminar provided the solutions that were necessary to reduce the devastating effects of HAI, specifically nosocomial infections.
Solution
The solution to the above problem would entail HAI surveillance by healthcare facilities in the country. These facilities should collect standardized data regarding the issue and then utilize the statistics to trace the internal performance as well as make comparison with the international and national benchmarks.
Opportunity
The seminar captured a very important opportunity for me as a DNP nurse. Participating in the program will help me discover the ways in which the HAIs can be tracked in hospitals and get knowledge regarding the statistical aspect of the matter. Additionally, participating in the seminar will expose me to best-practices that are undertaken by numerous hospitals not only in the country but in the world overall.
Program Competencies Addressed
During the seminar, several nursing competencies were addressed as follows:
Professional behavior-The presentations placed emphasis on ensuring professional behaviors override everything else so as to combat the HAI.
Communication skills were enhanced
Collaboration between various workforce within an intensive care unit setting was also emphasized
Clinical decision-making was also addressed with respect to HAI
Porfolio Practice Hours
I, (INSERT NAME), verify that I have completed (NUMBER OF) practice hours in association with the goals and objectives for this course. I also verify that all required course approvals are in place from my faculty and practice mentor.
