For this module’s discussion, research a recent science news event that’s occurred in the last six months. The event should come from a well-known news source, such as ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, NPR, PBS, BBC, National Geographic, The New York Times, and so on. Post a link to the news story, and in your initial post, identify the following: Summarize your news story and its contributions to the science or STEM fields. If your news event is overtly related to diversity, how does this event contribute to diversity studies? If your news event does not directly relate to diversity, how could the science behind your event be applied to diversity studies? In response to your peers, provide feedback about their news story and describe the value of the scientific lens for understanding diversity. According to NBC News, the fires and smoke “have exposed millions of people to hazardous pollution levels, causing emergency room visits to spike and potentially thousands of deaths among the elderly and infirm” (Associated Press, 2020). As so many other natural disasters have proved, the impact is greater on the lower income population who often lack insurance and do not have the means to relocate. The damage the smoke causes has lasting affects and can shape the diversity of communities going forward as the poor deal with the health impacts and the rich relocate and change the composition of the areas. This is nothing new however, in 2018 NPR reported that “major catastrophes increase a county’s poverty rate — the percentage of people living below the poverty line — by an average of 1 percent. That’s because disasters encourage those who are well off to leave, and it makes those with low income poorer” (Harnett). The natural world is capable of exasperating the already existent income and wealth gap and drain neighborhoods and towns of their economic diversity. Regards, Jeremy References Associated Press. The article continues to state all the different main contributions that emit greenhouse gases, and how the human race should all be working towards a common goal – reducing greenhouse gases. This is a diversity article in the science fields as there are all different ways that greenhouse gases come from. Agriculture, businesses, warehouses, every day individuals who transport to work. Every human, regardless of what they do, can all make a conscious decision to reduce their personal emission of greenhouse gases. Carpooling, riding bikes, switching their appliances to energy efficiency, reducing the use of appliances, warehouses switching to better eco-friendly equipment and operations, etc. References: “Greenhouse Gas Levels at New High Despite Hopeful ‘Blip’ From Anti-COVID Lockdowns” (23rd, 2020 November) CBS News Retrieved from: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/greenhouse-gas-levels-new-high-climate-change-un-world-meterological-organization/ Get a 10 % discount on an order above $ 100 Use the following coupon code : NURSING10
