Family studies Essay Family studies Essay The author argues that most family studies have focused on a functionalist definition of family where the unit is seen as fulfilling certain needs of society. What is the author saying about the current definition of the family? What is the issue with the current definition or is there one? Explain. What is your definition of the family and why? Is family universal? Why or why not? The author is saying that a functionalists definition regards to family as a system made up of different parts which depend on each other. The states the “four basic function of the family” as a way of defining how functionalists uphold the notion that families are an important social institution and that they play a key role in stabilizing society. The issue with this definition is that it lacks inconclusiveness to the many other cultures and their beliefs within society. In my opinion there’s no true definition of family. Oftentimes the definition of family is limited by the ideal of social standards within society, but each family has their own principles and beliefs. Family is literally what you and those involved make it. I do believe family is universal because in modern day, the meaning of a lot things has changes, which allows people have a different perspective of life. How did Native Americans, African Americans, and European families differ? As Americans encountered more goods in stores and produced fewer at home, the ability to remove women and children from work determined a family’s class status. The duties of the middle-class husband and wife would delineate into separate spheres. Millions of families lost their savings as numerous banks collapsed in the early 1930s. Unable to make mortgage or rent payments, many were deprived of their homes or were evicted from their apartments. Both working-class and middle-class families were drastically affected by the depression. African Americans often received substantially less aid, and some charitable organizations even excluded Blacks from their soup kitchens. For many, Native-American property rights, free speech, and free exercise of religion were denied.
