Florida National University NUR4636 Substance Abuse Discussion Response attachment_1 attachment_2 Week 6 Lisandra Alejo Florida National University Nursing Department BSN Program NUR 4636 – Community Health Nursing Prof. Eddie Cruz, RN MSN October 9 th , 2019 Discuss the historical trends and current conceptions of the cause and treatment of substance abuse. People fall into substance abuse for several complicated reasons. The reason why a person might want to start substance abuse varies from one person to the next. There is peer pressure, pleasure, experimentation, or just curiosity. In earlier days, the society was of the general opinion that a person who was using drugs could easily or willingly stop the practice. However, over the years, scientists have done research and now appreciate that a person who wishes to stop the abuse of a substance will require more than good intentions or will power. Florida National University NUR4636 Substance Abuse Discussion Response In the past decades, the drugs or substances that could be abused were not as complicated or addictive as those used today. However, that doesn’t mean that people did not have as much difficulty treating substance abuse as they do today. A community nurse is in an excellent position to understand that a person who is addicted to any substance needs as much support as the world can offer. It doesn’t matter if the substance abused is alcohol or methamphetamine. Today, the treatment and management of substance abuse are possible. Because of the risk of a relapse, every person is treated according to their circumstances. 2. Identify and discuss the issues related to substance abuse in various populations encountered in the community health nursing practice. • Family – The state at which a family is in influences a person’s likelihood of substance abuse. If a family has parents that abuse drugs, this is likely to affect and influence the children negatively. If the family of a substance abuser comes together to help the person in all ways possible, such a person has a better chance of recovering. Economic circumstances – It is more likely for a person who is going through tough economic times to start substance abuse. A community nurse will first try and understand the circumstances which led to a person using drugs. Many are the instances when they discover that economic stress led to the start of drug abuse. Personal life circumstances – Studies done have shown that a person who starts or experiments with a substance at an early age is highly likely to be addicted to the drug. Also, sexually active teens are likely to fall into substance abuse. Personality – If a person tends to become easily stressed, they are likely to become addicted to drugs if they were to start using them. People who show depression, aggressive, hyperactive, and impulsive behaviors are likely to become victims of substance abuse (Velez- Moreno, 2017). It’s essential to understand the reasons that influenced a person to start substance abuse before trying anything else. • Education – In schools, students tend to result in substance abuse when they become stressed. The education level of a person can also influence a person’s probability of substance abuse. The lower the education level of a person, the lower the economic status of a person. This can easily lead to a person using drugs. Describe and discuss the concepts of interpersonal and community violence Interpersonal violence is the willing use of physical power towards an individual or many people that is likely to result in death, deprivation, or psychological damage (Barbosa, 2019). Community violence, on the other hand, is the type of violence that is directed by people that are not related to the victims in an intimate way. This type of violence happens typically without any warning and often arrives as a terrifying experience. The acts that are included in the community and interpersonal violence include mugging, rape, the sound of gunshots, racial tension, and riots. Often, such violence affects women and children the most. Florida National University NUR4636 Substance Abuse Discussion Response Describe and discuss the role of the nurse in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of violence A community nurse should see themselves as persons who should offer professional, impartial services to every human being irrespective of their race, creed, sex, or age. The nurse should do the following in case of: Primary prevention of violence – The nurse should be a person that doesn’t get involved in any way at perpetuating any form of abuse. They should try and stop an act of violence if they can. Secondary prevention of violence – Every victim of violence should be treated with respect and professionally (Anderson, 2019). The nurse’s role in the secondary stage helps a great at helping the victim deal with shock and trauma. Tertiary prevention of violence – A nurse should preach peace. This should be done through actions and words. ReferencesAnderson, E. J. (2019). Web-based and mHealth interventions for intimate partner violence prevention: a systematic review protocol. BMJ .
