Both are similar in that the researchers involved study the in-question phenomenon, both in a holistic model and in its natural form. Besides, according to Najafi et al. (2016), the researchers in the two offer a multitude of data interpretations and apply various data collection models hence ensuring the credibility and reliability of the findings. The main objective or principle of the two types of research is to create a detailed analysis of the behavior and cultural meanings, then construing the research findings. Ethnographic research and grounded theory differentiate in the methodology principles they apply. For instance, ethnographic research stresses comprehending the respondent’s behaviors regarding a given culture, meaning that the researchers focus on a single culture element and not the whole context. In contrast, the grounded theory focuses on bringing out the main category forming the basis of the study and connecting it with the details of the respondent’s behavior in the given phenomenon (Najafi et al., 2016). These two also differ in the time or period when the literature was reviewed. In the grounded theory, researchers utilize or review literature after the fieldwork to avoid the literature’s influence. The ethnographic research, on the other hand, uses conceptual literature before conducting fieldwork. This is intended to seeking directions and concepts to guide the way forward. Additionally, the two contrast in their approaches to sample selection, whereby the ethnographic research employs purposive sampling, grounded theory employs sampling technique. This means that ethnographic research has a smaller sample size than grounded theory. The researchers in grounded theory collect data through existing documents and interviews, analyzing and coding to establish an idea, while those in ethnographic do not focus on cultural definitions and do not establish a theory or hypotheses (Bamkin, Maynard & Goulding, 2016). One example of ethnographic research includes a researcher following clients or customers to their local areas to observe their interactions with a specific brand or product without hypothesizing on anything. A grounded theory research example is where research intends to understand the emotional and physiological elements influencing consumer behavior.
