Did you know that 60 years ago, there was no “Nursing Process?” Nurses just followed doctors’ orders and did not necessarily think for themselves. This week, you will be learning about various nurses who used evidence-based practice to develop nursing into the profession that it is today. In Workshop Five, you will be writing your own philosophy (theory) of nursing. You will be required to look back to this discussion and consider which of the nursing theorists mentioned have ideas that correspond to your view of the essence of nursing and how that plays out when caring for patients. The following paragraphs provide a sampling of some nursing theories you might consider investigating. The Philosophy of Nursing for the Indiana Wesleyan University School of Nursing is based on the Neuman Systems Model. Neuman focuses on assessment of physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual factors that may affect the client system (Neuman, 2011). You may want to consider exploring more about the Neuman Systems Theory for this nursing theorist discussion. Do you remember learning about Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and the stages of grief (Kubler-Ross, 1997)? The Theory of Chronic Sorrow developed by Eakes, Burke, and Hainsworth (1998) recognizes when we have a child who is developmentally delayed, or we lose a child or a spouse, certain events may trigger sorrow long after we have experienced all of the stages of grief. Phil Barker’s Tidal Model focuses on mental health using the metaphor of life being a voyage. If you have ever felt like you were drowning, you could probably relate to the common sense metaphors found in this theory. Many of the metaphors in this theory relate to water (Tidal, n. d. ). Barker focuses on the importance of allowing the patient to share their story because the patient is the expert when it comes to knowing what he or she has experienced (Tidal, n. d. ). Consider learning how to help your patients get into the lifeboat or put on the lifesaver when they are overwhelmed by a sea of despair. Katherine Kolcaba recognized the fact that pain may be a fact of life for some people (Comfort Line, n. d. ). We may not be able to eliminate all of the pain that they experience. In developing her concept of comfort for her Theory of Comfort, she considered three aspects of comfort: relief, ease, and transcendence (Comfort Line, n. d. ). Discomfort may be physical, psychospiritual, social, and environmental (Comfort Line, n. d. ). Learn how you can bring comfort to your patients who are suffering. Some theorists have a more narrow focus. If you are a maternal-child nurse, you may want to explore Ramona Mercer’s (2004) Theory of Becoming a Mother or Cheryl Tatano Beck’s Theory of Postpartum Depression (Lasiuk, & Ferguson, 2005). Learn the evidence-based assessment and interventions recommended by these nurses. Kristin Swanson developed her theory of caring after interviewing several women who had experienced a miscarriage (Jakobsen, 1998). Swanson asked these women to tell her about the nurses that cared for them after the miscarriage in order to determine what qualities a nurse needs to exhibit in order for patients to feel like their nurse really cares for them (Jakobsen, 1998). Swanson came up with five recurring themes that provide the framework for her theory of caring (Jakobsen, 1998). Indiana Wesleyan Virginia NUR 335 Henderson Basic Needs Theory Discussion Every theorist has a reason for approaching patients in a certain way. What is your story? How do you approach your patients? As you learn about these nursing theorists, you are encouraged to be open to considering new thoughts and new approaches to patient care. You will be asked to elaborate on this as you write your Personal Philosophy of Nursing paper due Workshop Five of this course.
