In my opinion, the entire medical system is designed in such a way it is impossible to really understand it until you combine both theoretical and clinical classes. Even so, I still believe that the nursing care concept is continuously changing so even when we graduate we continue being students. During these years I managed to have a better understanding of a variety of nursing concept. For today’s paper, I selected to discuss only two of them which had the largest impact on myself and on my career. The first of them is the self-concept which represents the basis of self-understanding. In my opinion, it is impossible to perform a quality job as long as you don’t have an understanding of who you really are in the medical system and how your actions can impact the others. During the clinical classes, I saw a situation in which one of the other students started crying after discussing with each patient about their pathologies. That proved a lack of self-awareness because a nurse must be able to see herself or himself as a provider of care and act as one. On the other hand, this also helps the patient because a nurse who is self-aware is also capable of determining different types of behavior in the other patients. It is generally accepted that the nurse has a big effect on the way the patient understand his or her diseases. Because of that, the care provided needs to remain positive, try to build a trusting relationship with the patient and always be aware of any body expressions that could be a big indicator of what is going on with the patient. (Zamanzadeh,Valizadeh.,Gargari, 2016) The second concept was in regard to the therapeutic use of self. This refers to the fact that the nurse is able to use aspects from his or her personality and experiences in order to establish a relationship with the patient. A patient who does not trust his or her nurse will most likely try to Evolution as a Nurse 3 avoid her during the hospitalization. During my clinical classes, I frequently saw cases in which the patient kept on telling us that they don’t want to ask for help from that nurse because she is mean and that they are waiting for the other one to come. This proves a lack of therapeutic use of self. I discovered that there are 4 criteria that characterize this technique: making yourself available by showing interest, active listening, exploring by asking further questions when needed and giving broad openings which allow the patient to choose.( Koloroutis,2014) Before I started studying nursing I had no idea what is the meaning of holistic health. After that I found out that it means focusing on the whole person rather than just on the pathology itself. What I also managed to find out is that there are 4 major elements that need to be taken into consideration: intellect, physics, emotions, and spirit. In this case, the role of the nurse is to become a partner with the patient and try to find ways to keep him safe mentally by creating a lasting relationship. Nursing Evolution Essay Paper Another thing that I learned is that medicine is an inter-collaborative work environment. It is impossible to practice medicine in a single field. For example, when we interview a patient with diabetes we found out that she was also scheduled for a visit to the cardiologist and also to the ophthalmologist. This is because in most of the cases there are multiple pathologies or a single pathology can have multiple complications that need to be treated. Even in the case of nurses, the ones who are working in the department needs to be in touch with the ones working in the surgical room in order to know what happened with the patient and what approach should be followed. The last lesson i learnt is in term of nursing leadership. The role of the nurse leader is to organize work, motivate the personal and provide an environment of high morale. The best example was during one of my classes when we had the chance to meet the nurse leader and Evolution as a Nurse 4 discuss with her about her duties. Without the presence of a leader the entire staff would be disorganized which would affect the quality of care and also the work flow. Overall I managed to learn many new things during my years of training but i am convinced that many more lessons awaits me. During my previous year as a nurse, we rarely discussed how pregnancies develop and also what are the possible complications. I found this class very useful both as a nurse and also as a possible future mother. From my point of view, many of the information which I learned theoretically in this class will have a huge impact on my development as a nurse. All the information which I received are very well researched and will have me in my career to be able to have a better understanding of different both physiological and pathophysiological processes. One of the things which I learned was in regard to the importance of keeping ourselves safe. Because of that, my favorite lessons was represented by the STIs one because it helps both the medical staff and also the patient. Being a medical staff we are at risk for many diseases which can be transmitted through the fluids of the patient, especially blood. After attending this course I was able to have a better understanding of how important are and also how to correctly use different protective pieces of equipment such as gloves, scrubs, and masks. This lesson also has a huge impact on the general population because now I am able to offer a better explanation and more informative notes to people the same age as me when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases. The WHO website states that more than 1 million STIs are acquired every day and in most of the cases this is because of the lack of knowledge of the population. Also, many pregnant women need to be aware of the fact that infection with syphilis will but them at high risk for negative outcomes of the birth such as stillbirth. (Who,2017) OB Class 3 Another subject taught during this class which has a big clinical impact is in regard to osteoporosis. v Many elder women develop this pathology and after attending this class I am more aware of the symptoms, methods of diagnosis and also the correct treatment. It is known that osteoporosis tends to cause more than 8.9 million fractures each year which can be translated into the fact that every 3 seconds a patient around the world suffers from an osteoporotic fracture. This further confirms the importance of understanding this pathology and the way it influences my nursing career. ) IOF,2017) Another thing which I was able to discover during this course is the importance of collaboration between different departments. Most of the OB pathologies require the attention and also the confirmation of many other departments in order to ensure that the treatment can be effectively administered. Even when it comes to the birth process, several medical staffs participate in the act in order to ensure that the newborn is delivered safe and healthy and that the traumatic effect of the intervention is as low as possible. Just having the gynecologist in the surgical theatre is not enough. It is essential to ensure that the pain is controlled and that the female is also psychological prepared to become a mother in order to be able to promote healing and integration back into society. During my practical classes, I also managed to meet many people who had a lot to share with me. I will always remember when I had the chance to attend a complicated pregnancy. The main surgeon immediately took initiative and informed everyone of what is going on so everyone could be on position and ready to offer the highest quality medical care act. After this even I discovered how important is for a medical member to have leadership skills too because, in these kinds of complicated events, someone will have to take initiative in order to avoid an chaotic environment which can reduce the success rate of the surgical process. OB Class Overall I am convinced that this class will help me a lot in my career as a nurse. OB doesn’t only treat pathologies but also ensure the safe delivery of a new life and because of that the impact it has on society can be overwhelming 4 OB Class 5 References WHO,(2017), STIs, Online Article, Retrieved from: https://www.who.int/news-room/factsheets/detail/sexually-transmitted-infections-(stis) IOF,(2017), Osteoporosis,Facts and Statistics, Retrieved from: https://www.iofbonehealth.org/facts-statistics Nursing Evolution Essay Paper Running Head: ADVANCED MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING Nursing Evolution Paper By Dayana Gonzalez Chamizo West Coast University NURS 480 6th August 2019 1 Nursing Evolution Paper 2 Nursing Evolution Paper There are no doubts that clinical practice is as essential as theory classes too. In the medical field, it is not possible to provide help to the patient without implementing both of these elements. Theoretical classes help us have a better understanding of the reason why some of the pathologies arise while the clinical classes help us increase our accuracy when it comes to treating our patient. During these NURS 480 class, I was able to enhance my skill as a nurse both at a theoretical but also at a practical level. Since we spent a lot of time on the surgical ward, I was able to have a better understanding of the Orem’s Model which states that ordinary people in the society wants to have full control of their lives. This means that all those patients who underwent a surgical procedure will eventually desire to return back to their initial state and be able to take care of themselves as they did before. As a nurse, it is our role to ensure that the patient is stable both physically but also mentally. The Orem’s Model incorporates three major nursing theories such as The theory of self-care, the theory of self-care deficit and the theory of the nursing system. A patient who is able to understand the importance of self-care will be a patient who will make sure that his or her health status is normal. A nurse who is able to make a patient understand the importance of these elements will improve the health care practice on multiple levels. (Afrasiabifar,Mehri,Sadat,2016) The surgical department admits all types of pathologies starting with gastroenterology cases such as appendicitis, endocrinology cases such as hyperthyroidism or even gynecological ones such as breast cancer. Because of that, from my point of view, this definitely one of the departments which focuses the most of inter-department communication. Even though the surgeon and the nurse staff are aware of how to treat the patient, they will still need support from the other departments. For example, during our clinical cases, I was able to assess a patient who underwent Nursing Evolution Paper 3 a mastectomy due to breast cancer. Even though the wound was healing correctly, the surgeon was continuously in touch with the oncologists in regard to the risk of recurrence. This proves how important communication is. Nevertheless, leadership skills are without any doubts another must-have, especially during procedures. The following are traits which I was able to identify during these classes: loyalty, empathy, respect, selflessness, integrity, and passion for work. There was one class during which we attended a surgical procedure. That’s when I was able to see that the main surgeon took the leader position and instructed everyone what to do. He was in charge of making sure that everyone knows what he or she is doing and that the outcomes were the one which he expected. This is very important especially in situations in which there is a severe need of order. (Sfantou, Laliotis,2017) I can conclude by stating that this class was very interesting for me and that I am convinced that I will be able to implement all the information gain in my nurse activity.Nursing Evolution Essay Paper ORDER NOW FOR CUSTOMIZED AND ORIGINAL ESSAY PAPERS I was also able to have a better understanding of some of the pathologies through the three concepts maps we had to prepare during the class. I am looking forward to enhancing my knowledge in this field as I am sure this is something I would like to continue doing in the near future. Running head: EVOLUTION AS NURSING STUDENT Evolution as Nursing Student Institution Affiliation Date 1 EVOLUTION AS NURSING STUDENT 2 Nursing education has both theoretical and practical training methods; at first, it became challenging to understand the various concepts and theories. Being a medical-surgical nurse, knowing about all areas of adult health is mandatory, but following the ideas that are involved in the study was hard. Medical-surgical nursing covers a broad range of patient care and understanding the general system theory in nursing was helpful. This theory breaks down the course concepts into small parts; I was able to learn how each part works together in the body system. This theory enhanced my understanding of organs in anatomy. Adaptation theory clarified to me how human growth and development processes occur in an orderly and predictable manner that starts with conception and ends with death (Morton, Fontaine, Hudak & Gallo, 2017). Since the concepts that are in the nursing theories involves the patient, the environment, health and nursing goals and roles. I was able after the first semester of my class work to understand the foundations of nursing practice, and I can now analyze what I know and what I need to know. Since nursing theories are based on deductive and inductive reasoning, it’s now easy for me to understand how to take care of different people by their social and cultural factors. At first, I was naïve and had no confidence, approaching patients, and their families were difficult. After interacting with my fellow students and learning from already registered nurses, my communication skills improved. I can be able to communicate with patients, families and face the disciplinary team with ease and confidence when providing holistic patient-centered care to the population. One crucial communication skill that I have learned to have is being a good listener. During the orientation phase, I can engage the patient in treatment, and the patient can be able to ask questions and offer explanations and information, this applies to the patient’s family. In a hospital setup, I can now communicate effectively with other clinicians and EVOLUTION AS NURSING STUDENT 3 pharmacists to be able to get advice on how to deal with specific issues. Communication skills were hard for me to master but through education and evidence-based training, I have advanced my communication skills. One of the leadership skills that I possess is collaborative and team building skill. My joy is creating a good working relationship with my colleagues and patients and cooperatively working together to achieve the right balance and deliver quality services to the patients. Making this collaboration is not easy, it means I have to be a good role model and create a sense of community to my peers. Nursing Evolution Essay Paper A scenario happened in the hospital that we were practicing that my fellow nurse due to the poor way of communicating an error occurred in treatment diagnoses. I took the responsibility of explaining to the patient what happened and the reason it was not intentional, and on the other hand, I had to talk with my friend on the importance of excellent communication skills. Running head: REFLECTION 1 Reflection Institution Affiliation Date REFLECTION 2 My term as a mental health student has enabled me to appreciate the excellent work done by nurses who handle mentally ill patients on a daily basis. It has been indeed an evolution for me. This is because, even though I had planned well taking up this course, I didn’t have in mind the bigger picture of what nurses in this department of mental health care deal with on a daily basis. It is after I took up the course and interacted with patients with mental illness at various degrees, that I learned the bigger picture of what to expect in my career. Therefore, the term has been an eye-opener where I got to appreciate that mental health is a healthcare department that requires specialized physicians to handle the patients. There is a massive shortage of mental health care workers in America (Mental Health America, 2015) During the term, I have learned a lot through theory classes but learned a lot more during my interactions with mentally ill patients and their nurses that I got to appreciate more of what to prepare for in the future of my career. I have learned common types of mental disorders including; clinical depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and many others. I am now a bit knowledgeable in medications prescribed to various disorders, I have also learned on side-effects of various medications. I am now well aware of therapeutic levels and basic lab operations and principle. I have gotten basic concepts that are bound to help me be disciplined in my career. These include self-awareness, safety, and therapeutic communications. Therefore, I have been able to acknowledge the roles of each stakeholder, from family and friends of the patients to nurses and colleagues. Handling various cases together with the qualified nurses during my rotations gave me confidence that I can as well learn and be able to take responsibilities when called upon to handle any mentally ill patient. According to research, 18% of adult Americans suffer a mental health condition (Mental Health America, 2015). Therefore this is a population that requires specialized REFLECTION 3 care. I have also made friends with great colleagues, nurses and some patients as well. This is what has made me adapt easily. I have been able to improve my performance in my theory classes. This has been catalyzed by my dedication to interacting with patients, nurses and family members of the patients where I gathered information that helped me a great deal when interpreting theoretical concepts. I am now well aware of therapeutic levels and basic lab operations and principle. I have gotten basic concepts that are bound to help me be disciplined in my career. These include self-awareness, safety, and therapeutic communications.
