DQ 2 – Frameworks for Professional Nursing Practice Nursing competency refers to the core abilities required to fufill one’s role as a nurse and is important to establish a foundation for nursing education (Fukada, 2018). These competencies are essential for improving nursing quality especially with healthcare constantly changing as well as a rapidly aging population and decreasing birthrates (Fukada, 2018). Fukada mentions seven nursing competencies including applying knowledge, building intrapersonal relationships, providing nursing care, practicing ethically, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, expanding professional capacity, and ensuring high quality nursing care. To acquire nursing competency, nurses should possess specific skills and traits to successfully perform their duties (Fukada, 2018). In addition to these skills, the nurse must also integrate elements like knowledge, techniques, attitude, critical thinking, and personal values when needed (Fukada, 2018). Personal traits essential for nursing include affection and understanding, self-control, and critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Skills or attitudes required for nursing include being autonomy, being aware of one’s limitations, respecting patient rights, and maintaining knowledge up to date with continuous learning (Fukada, 2018). The ANA states that assurance of competence is the responsibility of the profession, individual nurses, professional organizations, regulatory agencies, and employers (Strong, 2017). Nurses can maintain or enhance their competencies through various ways. These include education, professional organizations, networking, attending conferences or webinars, continuous nursing education modules, and certification (Strong, 2017). References Fukada, M. It provides a general framework that explains nursing through people, environment, nursing, and health concepts. However, these concepts have a different meaning in different theories. Among the theories presented by Masters (2020), the one that closely matches my belief is Reed’s Self-Transcendence Theory. This theory confirms my thinking that the health of human beings is more than relieving pain and illnesses. The concept of self-transcendence explains that humans adapt to the environment, which means that they may change behavior and spiritual beliefs depending on the environment. The concept of well-being indicates that health includes the feeling of happiness and hopefulness. Besides, vulnerability means that people are prone to the adverse effect of environmental factors that cause diseases. I believe that people’s health can improve through positive interaction with the environment. In my perspective, the environment is the place or a group of people where a single person belongs. In Reed’s theory, a person is a human who lives with the help of the environment. It includes the community, family, and physical surroundings that humans need for a better life. Therefore, when people have positive interactions with the environment, they receive all the things they need to live healthily. Besides, the theory matches my belief that health refers to the ability to feel satisfied in every aspect of life including, social, mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing (Dhama et al., 2017). Therefore, a healthy person is comfortable with everything. The theory that Reed explained has the same concept because it explains health as the feeling of wholesomeness, which means feeling comfortable in everything concerning one’s life. Moreover, the theory approach nursing as something more than bedside care. That is, nurses should assist people with interpersonal processes to help them have a positive relationship with the environment, including the community and physical surroundings. Similarly, I believe that nurses should give counseling and education to patients apart from medical interventions. References Masters, K. (2020).
