Write one observation about the historical material on the 17th-century , one observation about the life of the poet you have been assigned, and then answer the questions about the poem that you have been assigned from the list below. Read ALL the poems on the reading list but answer the questions pertaining to the one you have been assigned. Poetry Questions: 1) What is the poem about? Theme? Central idea? What is the central situation being described? 2) What’s on the speaker’s mind? 3) How would you describe the poem’s tone? Happy, sad, angry, mournful, etc etc. Justify your answer. 4) What strategies does the poet use to achieve his/her purpose? Pay close attention to words used, images, metaphors, conceits (see handout for definition), and other poetic devices. 5) Is this a good poem? If yes, why? If not, why not?
