Theory of Transpersonal Caring Utilizing the Nursing Process module_a_group_3_case_scenario.pdf module_a_spring_2018.pdf n4343_2nd_powerpoint_middle_range_rmb.pdf MODULE A GROUP 3 CASE SCENARIO Case Scenario Illustrating Nursing Care Framed by WATSON’S Philosophy and Theory of Transpersonal Caring Utilizing the Nursing Process (Masters, 2015, p.58) Ms. W.42-year-old single mother who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. She has two daughters, who are currently in high school. Since her admission to the hospital unit, diagnosis, and treatment initiation, Ms. W. has been tearful and has spent most of her time alone. Upon preparation for the initiation of the nurse-patient relationship, the nurse is mindful of the first three caritas: practicing living kindness and equanimity for self and other; being authentically present and enabling, sustaining, and honoring the deep belief system and subjective life world of self and the one being cared for; and cultivating one’s own spiritual practices, including deepening of self-awareness and going beyond the ego self as necessary before the initiation of the assessment phase of nursing care. As the nurse-patient relationship is established and the assessment and planning phase of the process begins, it is important that the relationship that is developed and sustained is a helpingtrusting, authentic caring relationship and that the plan developed allows for growth. As the nurse engages in the assessment and planning process with Ms. W., the nurse is cognizant that he/she is in a professional caring relationship, and she makes a conscious effort to see the mindspirit-body-nature person-in other words, the whole person for whom he/she is caring. At this point in the patient’s care, assessment data indicate that nausea and vomiting with weight loss are of some concern. Nevertheless, Ms. W.’s primary concern is her daughter’s future if she does not survive. The nurse uses current best practices to administer the prescribed medication and other comfort measures to alleviate the nausea and vomiting associated with her treatment. During this process, the nurse also uses the caritas principles to allow for meeting the primary, deeper concern the patient and to address the core of her current distress-that is, the issues of her ultimate survival and the well-being of her daughters if she does not survive. The nurse uses the caritas principles of being present to and supportive of, the expression of positive and negative feelings as a connection with a deeper spirit of self and the one being cared for, and creative use of self and all ways of knowing as part of the caring process. In this way, he/she creates a healing environment were by wholeness, beauty, comfort, dignity, and peace are potentiated. The nurse reverentially and respectfully assists with MMs. W.’s basic needs, with an intentional caring consciousness of touching and working with the embodied spirit of another, honoring the unity of being. The nurse allows for a spirit-filled connection while administering human care essentials, which potentiate alignment of the mind-body-spirit, wholeness, and unity of being in all aspects of care. The nurse attends to both Ms. W.’s embodied spirit and evolving emergence, and opens and attends to the spiritual, mysterious, and unknown existential dimensions of life, death, and suffering (Watson, 2008, p. 31) to create interactions as he/she provides for the care of the whole patient, including the physical realm. Evaluation is based on the effectiveness of interactions and mutual reflection by the nurse and the patient (Masters, 2015). Each group member will make recommendations to the plan of care for Ms. W. in the scenario, based on other potential or actual nursing diagnoses typical for patient with the same medical condition or symptoms and demographics. Each group member should develop a plan for one additional nursing problem using Watson’s nursing theory as the basis for practice. Each group member should share the plan with their group members.
