Transforming Texts
You should choose a short section of your expert text and rewrite it for a non-expert audience (roughly 300 words). It’s important to note that you aren’t summarizing the expert text, you are re-writing a portion of it. In doing this, you should employ some or all of the rhetorical and writing moves we’ve been discussing, that help orient a text for non-expert readers. Be sure to label, at the top of your revision, who the audience is that you’re writing for. This means that you should not just say “the general public.” Instead, say something like, “readers who are concerned about XX,” or “parents concerned about XX in California” (if that fits your article). The specific audience you write for is up to you.
