Sometimes several must be tried before finding one that produces the most beneficial results with the fewest side effects. Psychotherapy therapy focuses on the personal and interpersonal issues underlying depression. It explores an individual’s life to bring to light possible contributing causes of the present depression. During treatment, the therapist helps the patient to become aware of his or her thinking patterns and how they came to be. There are several different sub types of psychotherapy, but all have the common goal of helping the individual develop healthy problem solving and coping skills. Two of the most widely used treatment methods are cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy (Hammen 141). Cognitive-behavioral therapy was developed by Aaron Beck (Hammen 141). It assumes that the patient’s faulty thinking is causing the current depression and focuses on changing the depressed patient’s thought patterns and perceptions. Treatment of Depression Sample Permalink: https://nursingpaperessays.com/ treatment-of-depression-sample / Depression is a mental illness that can be very chronic and causes mood disorders, a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. With proper diagnose and treatment depression can be controlled however, it has not always been easy to diagnose or receive treatment. Depression was initially called Melancholia and was first found in the Mesopotamian texts in the second millennium B.C. However, at this time it was not considered a medical issue. On the other hand the early Mesopotamian civilization believed that the person was possessed by the devil and could only be attended by a priest. Therefore, the first understanding of depression was seen as a spiritual illness and not a physical condition. However, today this disorder is known to be a mental illness. Being diagnosed for Depression can be very tricky because many of the depression symptoms can lead to other mental or bipolar disorders. Therefore, in order to properly diagnose depression the doctor must pay very close attention to the symptoms and the time the patient has experienced the symptoms. In the case of depression blood test and laboratory work does not tell the doctor much. That is why the doctor talking with the patient is the most important diagnostic tool. Patient and family history are also very important in diagnosing depression because it could be hereditary or a previous disease on the patient could be triggering similar symptoms. The general public believe that depression is caused by both nature and nurture factors. A majority of the public believed that nurture has a greater influence on whether the person gets depression or not.Treatment of Depression Sample Uni-polar depression is when a person is always in a very low mood which would last at least 2 weeks to be fully diagnosed with depression. A person who has unipolar depression usually do not see the positive side of things. Bipolar depression is when a person has sudden mood swings from really low mood to sudden high mood, bipolar depression is harder to diagnosis than unipolar depression. Depression is thought to involve many genes. Biological psychologists believe that a person usually develop depression because of genetic factors. Family history is very important evidence for doctors to see when tying to diagnosis depression since the family history will show whether depression illness runs through the families that could have been inherited. Weissman found that around 50% children whose parents also expressed depressive symptoms develop depression too. This is a great number to inherit depression from therefore this shows that genetics plays a great role in developing depression. Many twin studies have also shown results that genetically identical twins (MZ) have a greater number of inheriting depression than non-identical twins (DZ). For instance an experiment carried out by Prince in 1968 expected that MZ twins would have a higher concordance for depression compared to DZ twins. Results found were that the MZ twins who were raised in the same environment/family showed a concordance of 68% and DZ twins had a lower concordance of 28% for bipolar disorder only. Depression affects many people around the world. Depression can be described as feeling sad, lost, angry, and frustrated.Treatment of Depression Sample Today, antidepressants are the main way to treat depression. Researchers are working on a new treatment to better help people with depression. This treatment is called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Researchers want to know how TMS can be used, and what type of depression patients they want to use it on. Studies have helped narrow down the facts of depression and the effect of TMS. The future of TMS is still unclear but one day it will provide a new era of treatment for depression. According to the center for disease control , one in ten adults has depression (Centers for disease, 2011). Depression can be described as feeling sad, lost, angry, and frustrated. Everyone occasionally feels this way but these feelings are brief (NIMH, 2010). A person with true depression has these feelings which interfere with everyday life. There are many different types of depression but the most common and most severe type of depression is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), or major depression. Major depression is common, recurrent and a leading contributor to functional impairment (Janicak, Nahas, Lisanby, Solvason, Sampson & McDonald, 2010). Because depression is such an extensive disorder, there are many drug treatments (antidepressants) out to try and accommodate for depression.Treatment of Depression Sample These drugs, while helping some, do not help others; it is estimated that 20% to 40% of patients do not benefit or are unable to tolerate standard treatments (Janicak, Nahas, Lisanby, Solvason, Sampson & McDonald, 2010). In order help everyone, researchers have been looking for new treatments that do not use drugs. Today, studies are focusing on a new treatment. This treatment is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). TMS is a noninvasive technique for stimulating the cerebral cortex and altering cortical and subcortical… References: Avery, D., Holtzheimer, P., Russo, J., Neumaier, J., Dunner, D., & Haynor, D., … Roy-Byrne, P.
