Types of Character Flaws
Guidelines for types of character flaws: In most discussions of tragedy, attention is usually paid to the fatal flaw or flaws within the central character. What common types of flaws are exposed in these tragic figures and texts? [Please identify the types of flaws and use them as the organizing principle for your paper.] Title: Use the formula (Catchy Title: Literal Title). Epigraph: Use a quotation from any of the primary texts, secondary sources, or another text that has relevance for the direction of your paper. Thesis: Your thesis should come near the end of your introductory paragraph and should be a direct response/answer to the question regarding the plays. Organization: Your paper should be organized by the ideas raised by your thesis. Do not organize the paper by looking at one text and/or character then moving on to another text/character in a series of discrete discussions. Use main points (topic sentences for your body paragraphs) that are aspects of your thesis and then use the plays to support your ideas. You will, inevitably, use each text in several different parts of your paper. Evidence: Use at least EIGHT brief (no more than four lines in length) quotations from the texts, TWO from EACH of the plays and TWO from at least ONE SECONDARY source (you may use those provided during class or you may find another article or articles from elsewhere, so long as they are from reputable and scholarly sources). This is an absolute minimum. Documentation: Quotations must be documented using an in-text citation. Remember that quotations from A Doll House and Fences will be cited by page number while quotations from Hamlet will be cited by Act, scene, and line number. You will supply a Works Cited page for your three primary texts and the secondary source(s). Sentence writing, mechanics, and manuscript format: Please take good care of your prose; make sure you have proofread and edited your paper before you submit it. Your paper should be formatted according to MLA guidelines Please note: three of the four sources will be provided. The last source will be a secondary source as stated above
