University Dance Theatre Concert Assignment
University Dance Theatre Concert Assignment For the DANC 185A online course, you must complete one special project which includes viewing the University Dance Theatre concert and writing a 3-4 page analysis of the concert. After accessing the ticketing site and purchasing a ticket, you will be sent a private video link to the performance. The link will only be available November 13th-17th. This assignment is mandatory and there is no substitution. Instructions: Access the ticketing purchase page at https://oduartstix.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=1854. Write a 3-4 page analysis of the concert. You will analyze only two of the dances in the concert. There will be a total of 8 dances. One piece is my choosing (James Morrow’s NONFICTION), one is yours. This analysis should include description, interpretation and evaluation of BOTH dances selected. (50 points each/100 points total) Description: A detailed and accurate account of the dance with which most (if not all) viewers would agree. Title, costumes, set, lighting, choreographer’s background information, music information, etc., etc. Interpretation: The process of explaining the meaning or purpose of the dance. Evaluation: Opinion: a positive or negative assessment – What reasons do we have for saying something is good or bad? Preparation: Watch each dance carefully. Take notes on the dances when they finish, not during the performance. Note the title, costuming, lighting, and the type of music for each piece. I will post the program in Blackboard as a document to view so that you can have it while you are watching and while you are writing. Allow your program to assist you in retrieving information about the work. Write down any ideas you have concerning the theme of each dance. Make sure to attend to temporal elements (speed and rhythm), spatial elements (formations and traveling patterns), and choreography. Also notice the style of the movement, for example, is it jazzy and energetic or balletic, soft and flowing? What dynamics do you observe? What kinds of shapes do you see in the piece? Describe specific movements. Connect the dance to something we have discussed in class. Helpful Tips: Take thorough notes, but not while the piece is occurring. The better your notes are, the easier it will be to write the paper. Proof-read your paper, try reading it aloud to yourself or someone else for clarity and correct grammar. Check the spellings of unfamiliar words. Remember that your paper should be 3-4 pages and should include the following: introduction, description/interpretation/evaluation of NONFICTION, description/interpretation/evaluation of one other dance of your choice, conclusion, and appropriate spelling and grammar.
