The purpose of this assignment is to ground ideas from any lecture topic from the first six weeks of class in a case study from a municipality in the Toronto city-region. Your essay should document an urban development, planning, or policy issue that has been written about in at least 3 different Toronto newspaper articles (e.g., in the Toronto Star or Globe & Mail) within the last decade and make an original argument about how the print media has represented that issue in its coverage. Your essay should answer the following questions: What is the urban development, planning, or policy issue discussed by the journalist? Why is this issue of public interest? How does the issue relate to ideas, concepts, and arguments discussed in urban geography lectures and assigned readings? How has the print media story been told and framed by the journalist? Whose voices/perspectives/priorities are quoted and paraphrased and whose are absent? What information is present and what information is missing? How have city leaders (e.g., urban planners, policymakers, politicians) responded to the issue? What more could to be done to address this issue? The essay should be 10, double-spaced, and typed pages in length using 12-point font with the pages clearly numbered: title page (1 page, with a unique essay title, full name, student number, and date of submission); introduction (2 pages, provide overview of the urban development tension, the essay argument, and the essay structure); body of essay (4 pages, interpret print media coverage); conclusion (2 pages, summarize analysis and explain what more needs to be done); and a bibliography (1 page with a minimum of three newspaper references and six scholarly references other than the course textbook).
