Taking the assigned readings and lecture as background,  research and identify ONE CONTEMPORARY (after the year 2000)  work of environmental art or land art or ecological sound art;  summarize its main features and assess its effectiveness in addressing ecological/environmental issues.

These three questions are supposed to be three different essay topics. therefore three small essays each about a little more than a page. Question 1 (worth 5 points):  Write a thoughtful, well-organized essay on representations of men and women in The Godfather. Is hegemonic patriarchy displayed in the film? SURVEYING THE LANDSCAPE Contributing productively to a conversation—academic or otherwise—means first looking to see what others in the conversation have said and developing something worthwhile to contribute; in these regards, you’ve mostly done your homework (figuratively and literally). But making your case successfully requires more than simply writing whatever pops into your head.   REVIEW  Earlier in the semester, we read Chapter 2: Rhetorical Analysis in Critical Reading, Critical Writing: A Handbook to Understanding College Composition. Back then, the point was to learn to read texts in context—to comprehend not only the words on the page but also the circumstances in which the text was produced, including the context it was written in, the audience it was written for, and the writer’s purpose in relation to that audience. This time around, we will revisit thinking rhetorically (thinking in terms of audience, purpose, and context), though with the intention of better understanding the rhetorical situation of your own project so that you might craft your essay to give it the best possible chance of success. If necessary to refresh your memory, review/reread Chapter 2  (Links to an external site.)  in Critical Reading, Critical Writing: A Handbook to Understanding College Composition. Landscape and Class John Barrell and T.J. Clark are remarkably aligned scholars of social class and the history of art. For both, their main focus is the representation of socio-economic difference in the 19th century—a time where there was a profound growth and transformation in urban centers, and agrarianism was giving way to industrialism. While aligned, Barrell and Clark focus on different contexts—Britain and France—and examine artists/artworks with incredibly divergent politics (i.e. the differences in the landed nobility of England and Courbet’s Bohemianism). Drawing from one example of the English landscape in Barrell and one work by Courbet as discussed by Clark, this essay asks you to compare and contrast how these artists depict landscape as a social history. You will need to draw from Barrell and Clark’s essays as evidence to prove your point (and I will be looking heavily at your ability to apply their readings to artworks).
