Virtual Lab 8: Human Impact
A. Water footprints
• Describe the water crisis. How is it impacting women and children globally? What is happening with the Ogalala (be specific)?
Water crisis refers to lack of access to safe water sources. Inadequate drinking water supply is among the world’s major causes of preventable morbidity and mortality.
Water related health burdens are borne by women and children who may forego schooling and childhood in order to transport water from distant sources. Women and children are also often responsible for the gathering of fuel wood both for cooking and for boiling the polluted water.
The High Plains stretch northward from West Texas to Wyoming and South Dakota, and in natural conditions form a dry grassland. There is less than 16 inches of rain a year near the Rockies and in West Texas, but that increases eastward to 28 inches in central Kansas. The rainfall varies a great deal from year to year, however. The steady gradient of increasing rain to the eastward, but varying yearly rainfall, means that the optimal western limit for growing crops such as corn, rather than grazing cattle, shifts each year. This problem is made worse because there is hardly any water surplus: evaporation levels are very close to precipitation levels. Apart from the constraints on farming, this fact means that there is little recharge of ground water from precipitation: ground water percolates only very slowly eastward in underground aquifers from the areas where Rocky Mountain snowmelt recharges them.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) began intensive research on the Ogallala in 1978. It found that the Ogallala had discharged perhaps 3 maf/yr into springs and rivers before development: this, then, would be a sustainable yield from the aquifer as it used to be, compared with the 1980 pumping rate of 18 maf/yr.
• Describe what the water footprint is and how it is estimated.
The water footprint of an individual, community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services consumed by the individual or community or produced by the business. Water use is measured in water volume consumed (evaporated) and/or polluted per unit of time.
A water footprint can be calculated for any well-defined group of consumers (e.g., an individual, family, village, city, province, state or nation) or producers (e.g., a public organization, private enterprise or economic sector). The water footprint is a geographically explicit indicator, not only showing volumes of water use and pollution, but also the locations. However, the water footprint does not provide information on how the embedded water negatively or positively affects local water resources, ecosystems and livelihoods.
• Report the two or more estimates of your water footprint (and the calculator(s) that you used).
• Describe three ways that you (or your society) could reduce your water footprint.
We can use public transport, or pooled vehicles for going to office , we can decrease the use of gasoline
We should not waste potable water. We can store rain water and use for watering our plants.
B. Carbon footprints
• Describe what has happened to atmospheric CO2 over the last 100,000 years and how this is thought to be impacting the climate.
Over the last 100,000 CO2 content has been increasing due to excessive use of fuel, human population, large scale deforestation
In the distant past (prior to about 10,000 years ago), CO2 levels tended to track the glacial cycles. During warm ‘interglacial’ periods, CO2 levels have been higher. During cool ‘glacial’ periods, CO2 levels have been lower. This is because the heating or cooling of Earth’s surface can cause changes in greenhouse gas concentrations.
• Describe what the carbon footprint is and how it is estimated.
Carbon footprint is a shorthand to describe the best estimate that we can get of the full climate change impact of something. That something could be anything – an activity, an item, a lifestyle, a company, a country or even the whole world.
An individual’s, nation’s, or organisation’s carbon footprint can be measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment or other calculative activities denoted as .
• Report two or more estimates of your carbon footprint (and the calculator(s) that you used).
• Describe two ways that you (or your society) could reduce your carbon footprint.
One of the most popular ways utilizes trees in a process called Carbon Sequestration. Trees naturally absorb CO2 and release oxygen back into the environment. You only need to know how many trees it takes to offset your Carbon Footprint. Every tree is different and absorb these emissions at different rates depending on type and age.
The most common way to reduce the carbon footprint of humans is to . In manufacturing this can be done by recycling the packing materials, by selling the obsolete inventory of one industry to the industry who is looking to buy unused items at lesser price to become competetive. Nothing should be disposed off into the soil, all the ferrous materials which are prone to degrade or oxidise with time should be sold as early as possible at reduced price.
• Describe two ways that you would advocate we adapt society-wide in order to reduce our national carbon footprint. Be explcit.
The national carbon footprints can be reduced by reducing our energy consumption. We should use less of Air conditioning and warming systems.
We should use less fuel and try to save water consumption. We should go in for public transport system and use cycles for transportation to nearby areas.
We should recycle material like newspaper use recycled paper. We should recycle rain water and use it for gardens.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:

Instructions
As you learned in the reading for Unit 4, URLs (web addresses) associated with the retrieval information while others only have a series of numbers. These numbers are known as Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). The purpose of a DOI is to clearly and directly identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet.
For our discussion, this week, use the Herzing online library to conduct a search of peer-reviewed sources related to the topic you identified in the Unit 2 assignment. Find an article that includes a reference page. Examine the reference page.
Are there any sources that include a DOI?
In addition, what additional sources does the reference page lead you to that would be useful to you?
In a well-developed initial post, walk your classmates through the process as you conducted your search.
Then, explain what insights you had as you reviewed the reference page for your source.
Finally, make the case for the DOI and its ability to give the reader instant access to the exact same information you are using to inform or persuade them.
Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Sexual Dysfunction

I have been under a lot of stress lately. Between my job, the house and kids, and my wife complaining, I don’t seem to have the “staying power” I used to. Our sex life used to be perfect, but now I cannot perform as well or as often as I used to. My wife does not seem to understand and now I am feeling inadequate. I have a long life in front of me and I don’t want to live without feeling like a true man.”
Larry, age 40
This week’s topics include gender dysphoria, paraphilic disorders, and sexual dysfunction. The term gender dysphoria is the diagnosis describing those persons who experience incongruence between their gender assigned at birth and their experienced gender. Paraphilic disorders include pedophilia, exhibitionism, fetishism, and voyeurism, for example. Sexual dysfunction disorders include, most commonly, male erectile disorder, female orgasmic disorder, and other disorders. These diagnoses may be treated with pharmacologic and psychotherapy modalities.
This week, you will explore ways to assess and care for persons with gender dysphoria, paraphilic disorders, and sexual dysfunction disorders as outlined in the DSM-5.

Discussion: Assessment and Treatment of Gender Dysphoria, Paraphilic Disorders, and Sexual Dysfunction
Sexuality is an important part of each person’s quality of life. Research indicates that awareness of sexual identity and its importance may begin as early as age 3. However, individuals with varying diagnoses, disorders, or dysfunctions may grapple with issues related to their sexuality in their teen years, as well as into adulthood.
Assignment
· Explain the diagnostic criteria for the sexual dysfunction of female orgasmic disorder.
· Explain the evidenced-based psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic treatment for the sexual dysfunction of female orgasmic disorder.
· Compare differential diagnostic features of gender/sexual disorders
· Support your rationale with references to the Learning Resources or other academic resource
· N.B: Please remember to include Introduction, Conclusion and references less than 5 years old.

Week 2: Interprofessional Collaboration Strategies 3333 unread replies.111111 replies. In today’s changing healthcare environment, it is more important than ever for professional nurses to be skilled in collaborating with professionals from other healthcare disciplines. What communication strategies can professional nurses use to specifically promote collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and professionals? ?
In today’s health care system, delivery processes involve numerous interfaces and patient handoffs among multiple health care practitioners with varying levels of educational and occupational training. During the course of a 4-day hospital stay, a patient may interact with 50 different employees, including physicians, nurses, technicians, and others. Effective clinical practice thus involves many instances where critical information must be accurately communicated. Team collaboration is essential. When health care professionals are not communicating effectively, patient safety is at risk for several reasons: lack of critical information, misinterpretation of information, unclear orders over the telephone, and overlooked changes in status.
Lack of communication creates situations where medical errors can occur. These errors have the potential to cause severe injury or unexpected patient death. Medical errors, especially those caused by a failure to communicate, are a pervasive problem in today’s health care organizations. According to the Joint Commission (formerly the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, JCHAO), if medical errors appeared on the National Center for Health Statistic’s list of the top 10 causes of death in the United States, they would rank number 5—ahead of accidents, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as AIDS, breast cancer, and gunshot wounds. The 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System, revealed that between 44,000 and 98,000 people die every year in U.S. hospitals because of medical errors. Even more disturbing, communication failures are the leading root cause of the sentinel events reported to the Joint Commission from 1995 to 2004. More specifically, the Joint Commission cites communication failures as the leading root cause for medication errors, delays in treatment, and wrong-site surgeries, as well as the second most frequently cited root cause for operative and postoperative events and fatal falls.
Traditional medical education emphasizes the importance of error-free practice, utilizing intense peer pressure to achieve perfection during both diagnosis and treatment. Errors are therefore perceived normatively as an expression of failure. This atmosphere creates an environment that precludes the fair, open discussion of mistakes required if organizational learning is to take place. In the early 1990s, Donald Berwick wrote about patients needing an open communication system instead of experiencing adverse events stemming from communication failures. More than a decade later, this concept still has profound implications on our method of health care delivery. As such, this chapter will review the literature on the important role of communication and team collaboration in helping to reduce medical errors and increase patient safety.

Question Description
I’m trying to learn for my Health & Medical class and I’m stuck. Can you help?
Using the data on the “National Cancer Institute Data” Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups. Refer to your textbook and the Topic Materials, as needed, for assistance in with creating Excel formulas.
Provide the following descriptive statistics:
Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, and Mode
Measures of Variation: Variance, Standard Deviation, and Range (a formula is not needed for Range).
Once the data is calculated, provide a 150-250 word analysis of the descriptive statistics on the spreadsheet. This should include differences and health outcomes between groups.
APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Effect: Increase In Gun Ownership
3. Does increase in gun ownership affect the crime level in the society?
This question has several variables that increase in criminal related deaths, criminal activities, assault cases. A rational scale level of measurement can be used in this research because of the nature of these variables. The variables depict some categorical characteristics they have different degrees of impact to the dependent variable in the question.
4. How does the school environment affect the student performance?
The security level in the school, the type of rules and the consequences of going against the rules and the level of strictness of the teacher in the school are the main variables in the research question. The rules and regulations is can be grouped into some category as well as the level of strictness of the teachers another subordinate staff, in this case the best scale of measurement to be used is the ordinal scale. The variables also have some categorical characteristics they are not numerical.

5. What is the probability that randomly selected teenager watches movie over three time in a week?
The possibility or the variables in this case is that the student watches three times, less, or even more in a week. In this case the main scales of measurement will be internal level, this is basically because they can be quantified but the decimal or rather the zero point is not relevant to the study or rather is meaningless (Pratt, 2015).
6. Is there any relationship between the traffic congestion and the price of fuel?
The research questions in this has only one variable of interest which is the fuel prices which may or may not affect the traffic congestion. This is a question that is meant towards finding the if there is relationship between the variables in the study. The level of measurement in this case is therefore ordinal scale. The data in this case may have some continuous characteristics.
7. Is there any relationship between gender and student performance in statistics and science subjects?
The variables in this case will be the average performance of the students in the subjects of focus, they will be categorized according to their gender. These variables can actually be measured using the ratio level of measurements by some mathematical operations. In this case an average will be calculated of both genders performance on the subjects being studied. The data in this study will depict some continuous characteristics.
8. How does the training frequency affect muscle growth for body builders?
The variables in this case are time, the intensity of training and the diet. These are the three basic factors that affect muscle growth. These variables can be measured using some interval level of scale because they affect muscle growth differently in body builders. This scale will be giving some difference in categories in the manner they affect the dependent variable here which is muscle growth. The data in this case will be analyzed mathematically and so will give some discrete results (Sahin, Serdar, Serteser, Unsal & Ozpinar, 2018).
9. What is the relationship between mortality rates and poverty level?
This research question is intended to establish the existence of any relationship between the mortality rates within a population and the poverty level of that population. The variables in these case will be poverty and death rate which will be measured using the ordinal level scale because it will be giving the degree to which these variables affect each other. The variables in this case will be having some continuous characteristics because they rise and fall at some level.
10. How does technological development impact learning in schools?
This research question has two directions, that is, the dependent variable may affect the independent in two ways either positively or negatively. The variables in this case will include the teaching techniques used by the teachers, the accessibility of the learning materials and so on this will have some positive impact on the learning processes. These variables will be measured using the ordinal level scale because they will be categorized and rated on the impact they have on the subject of study.

WEEK 1: DISCUSSION- FOUNDATION OF THE ROLE OF THE NURSE PRACTITIONER AS PRESCRIBER LEGAL AND PROFESSIONAL ISSUES IN PRESCRIBING
Describe NP practice in your state.
Tell the class what your state laws are related to nurse practitioner prescribing.
Include how many continuing education hours are required for your state.
Describe the importance of knowing the specific laws in your state pertaining to Nurse Practitioners prescribing medications.
( Must be 300 words) Have APA format citation. only about 2 references is enough
There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
