[SOLVED] Oppositional Defiant Disorder

In previous weeks we discussed co-morbidity and differential diagnosis. Three of the disorders we examine this week are very similar, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Intermittent Explosive Disorder.  For your post, weave in answers to the following: How are these disorders similar?  How are they different? Discuss some key symptoms, distinguishing features, or factors that you can look for to help you differentiate and distinguish between these three disorders.  How do the “Development and Course” sections of the DSM and the “Risk and Prognostic Sections” of the DSM help us better understand each of these three diagnoses (include examples). Give an example of when it would be appropriate to diagnose an individual with two of these disorders (co-morbid), for example Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

[SOLVED] Anxiety and Phobias

Locate a movie, television, or Internet television show, or net streaming series that portrays a character with an anxiety disorder (For example, characters from the movies: The Aviator with Leonardo DiCaprio, What About Bob? with Bill Murray, The Truman Show, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? or Analyze That or TV shows: The Big Bang Theory or Monk or net steaming series: This is Us or Scrubs). In an essay of 500-750 words address the following: What were some of the irrational beliefs and attitudes that the characters displayed? In what way did these beliefs/attitudes manifest in the character’s behavior?  How does stress tie into anxiety?  What are some ways to modify stress and reduce anxiety? Use the GCU Library databases and include two to four scholarly sources from the GCU Library to support your claims in addition to the article you are critiquing. In addition to the scholarly resources from the library, you can include past classroom materials as well as your textbook as additional reference material. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required. This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. [SOLVED] Electrical Brain Stimulation

Just include an introduction with literature and the method used from the instructions below. Include at least 4 sources relevant to the research paper that follows the topic from the instructions below.  A hypothesis should also be included! Prominent in the research in physiological psychology is the study of drives (especially hunger), learning (especially Pavlovian and operant conditioning), and emotion (especially positive reinforcement or reward).  The experiment that follows involves all three areas.  We will explore the effects of manipulating the hunger drive on operant performance for electrical brain stimulation reward.  The research we will perform for this lab is a demonstration of the effects of food deprivation on reward mechanism in a brain site that has been found to influence food intake.  The region is the lateral hypothalamus (LH) and has been shown to increase food intake when stimulated (both with mild electrical stimulation and chemical stimulation).  Classic research has shown that electrical stimulation of the LH will also serve as reinforcement for operant conditioning.  The operant response we will be exploring is lever or bar pressing in an operant chamber (or “Skinner box”).  The use of the operant chamber is a useful way to explore the important aspects of operant conditioning. Performance in the chamber is and has been shown over and over again to explain and predict operant and classical conditioning of humans and other species.   The issue that we will explore is the effects of food deprivation on pleasurable sensations in the brain.  Many researchers have used psychophysical methods to explore the reward effects of brain stimulation in various brain regions.  In our experiment, you will be given raw data of performance of albino rats trained to lever-press for brain stimulation reward (BSR), brief pulses of electricity in the LH.  A key piece of the research is that the LH appears to be a key brain area in controlling food intake. Researchers in my lab collected the data that you will be given in this experiment.  You should write the report as though you actually performed the operations in the rat experiment.   This is an opportunity to explore experimentation in the hard science aspect of psychology.  Research of this type has been of great value in understanding the physiological mechanisms that mediate behavior.  While the experiments on brain stimulation reward (BSR) were completed some time ago, the research questions, BSR methods, and operant procedures are currently used and relevant to cutting-edge experimentation in the neurosciences.   Methods Subjects [not participants].    Sprague-Dawley albino rats were maintained on ad libitum (ad Lib.) food and water except for the food deprivation condition when only water was available.  The animals were maintained under a 12:12 light-dark schedule.  Measurement occurred during the dark portion of the cycle. One group (n=8) received BSR electrodes as described below.  A second group of rats (n=8) where used for measurement of reward threshold. Stereotaxic Surgery: The rats used in the BSR research under appropriate methods were given approved anesthesia and then surgically implanted with a single bi-polar electrode aimed at the lateral hypothalamus under IACUC approved surgical, anesthetic and post-operative procedures.  Localization of the site of stimulation was verified histological post experimentation. Apparatus:   BSR stimulation was delivered using a +/_ biphasic pulses delivered by a constant current stimulator control by a computer.  Animals pressed a lever on a continuous reinforcement (CRF) schedule in operant chambers with two levers (one was active) to receive reward.  Performance was collected at the end of the session on lab computers.   Procedure:  During the dark portion of the light-dark cycle experimental subjects were  given an operant sessions in which they were shaped to lever press for stimulation.  Rats were first tested one hour into this period (baseline/pre-manipulation testing with ad libitum food and water), and then after 24 h of food deprivation (water remained ad lib.).  Brain stimulation parameters:  biphasic square wave stimulation, delivered at 100 Hz, stimulation  train was 0.2 s with each response. Current intensities varied from 10 to 100 uA (amperes) descending in intensity to determine threshold.

[SOLVED] Learning and Cognition

Instrumental Conditioning.  Learning theorists and psychologists seek to understand behaviour, which promotes the continuation of behaviour and what extinguishes it. Punishment is used as one tool in instrumental conditioning as modifying or exterminating a behaviour. Describe an instance in life that might call for the use of punishment. After reading the APA code of conduct assigned in the week’s required reading, discuss the ethical limitations (including the concepts of “Principle A: Beneficence and Nonmaleficence” – (http://www.apa.org/ethics/code2002.html#principle_a) towards using the use of this method of learning. Lastly, apply these concepts and ethics to an experience you may have had.  2. Every learning experience involves motivation, which the learner may be aware of prior to the learning experience or realizes only after reflection. Contrast and compare the differences between extrinsic (incentive) and intrinsic motivation. How does motivation play a role in the different theories of learning (select two theories)? 3. Learning Styles  How we differ in the ways that we learn has been of interest to psychologists and educators alike for the last several decades. Distinguish between the three most supported learning style typologies: visualizer-verbalizer dimension, Kolb’s theory and Sternberg’s theory by comparing and contrasting their strengths and weaknesses. How does learning style influence educational intervention and/or approach? Lastly, apply these concepts to a learning experience you may have had.
