As the purview of design increases from physical artifacts to living systems, the conversation about design evolves.
We’re delving further into concepts like organizational transformation and social change.
To put it another way, we’re broadening the definition of design from the physical to the metaphysical: to the social, economic, and political realms.
It’s a question of connectivity, capacity, and power.

Biophilia and Service Design
Others are imagining the foundations of a new design aesthetic.
On closer investigation, this last point has startlingly revolutionary implications for the content of design in general, and the aim of service design in particular.
If what we’ve said is correct, it’ll be difficult for design not to stray into the delicate and sometimes inscrutable realm of human existence’s “action-patterns.”
However, design is not omnipotent, and “service design” is much less so, for the reasons stated above.
Instead, it must be “responsible” — that is, responsive — to everyone and everything, young and old, rich and poor, beautiful and ugly, those blessed or spurned by life: it must do so without embracing invention for the sake of invention in the pursuit of self-sufficiency and innovation, but rather marry the knowledge of “responding” to what is beautiful and ugly here and in the world.
In fact, this form of design is a “active philosophy” devoted to creating room for life.
Why shouldn’t design — specifically, service design — be a lifelong passion?
Why shouldn’t life, in all of its tremendous diversity, be the key to unlocking design?
This biophilia — or love of life — principle consequently serves as the foundation for a new service design aesthetic.
