EMRs are useful for creating legible and organized information and offers instant access to information about individual patients. Despite EMRs usage having positive effects, the adoption rate of EMRs has been slow and has been met with immense resistance from physicians. EHRs are a vital tool for ameliorating the quality and safety of healthcare delivery (Rao, DesRoches, Donelan, Campbell, Miralles, & Jha, 2011). This unsystematic review aims to express the barriers that physicians in rural and small practices face in adopting electronic health records. Problem Statement Despite there being benefits of electronic health records that have been agreed upon across the boards; healthcare providers have been slow to adopt EHRs and accompanying health information technology. The slow adoption of EHRs can be attributed to resistance among physicians. This is considering physicians are at the frontline of the electronic medical records use. Whether physicians support the use of electronic health records is a great determinant of their effects on various user groups in a healthcare setting. To ensure that medical errors are minimized, effective communication methods and sharing of information among healthcare providers can be achieved and ensure that patient medical records are managed well, information technology needs to be embraced in healthcare. In the United States, medical errors are the leader in causes of death. As opposed to electronic health records, paper records are prone to misplacing, losing, illegibility. It is, therefore, vital that physicians adopt electronic health records to get rid of issues that exacerbate to err and ensure that the safety and health of patients are improved. Considering the evidence that exists on the positive effects associated with adoption of EHRs, it is alarming that there are physicians who have been reluctant to adopt EHRs. Physicians play a pivotal role in the utilization of electronic health records. The present Capstone Project illuminates on the barriers that physicians are facing which hinder the adoption of EHRs.
