Type of Research: Quantitative Study To begin, explain your chosen research study, ensuring it is correctly identified as quantitative. Research Questions & Hypothesis. The research questions were: identify your research papers research question(s) and state and discuss them in a detailed paragraph. There was a total of 9 hypotheses: begin a detailed discussion around your research papers specific hypotheses Sample, Size, & Attribute. The sample was patients with dementia that live in long-term care facilities and had the cognitive functioning intact enough to rate their quality of life. The sample size came from two different meta-synthesis. The attribute for the first meta-synthesis was conducted by outside researchers, not the researchers of this study, and the size consisted of 31 studies of patients in long term care facilities who mostly had dementia. The attribute of the second meta-synthesis was conducted by a team working with the researchers conducting this study, and the size consisted of patients with dementia mostly living in a long-term care facility in 11 different studies. (O’Rourke et al., 2015). QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE STUDIES 9 Setting. The setting of the studies was a homelike environment, mostly long-term care facilities. (O’Rourke et al., 2015). Findings. The researchers found that they were able to successfully create and design a quantitative study with results from qualitative research on dementia patients’ perspective of their quality of life (O’Rourke et al., 2015). Type of Research: Qualitative Study This is the summary of the 2013 study titled, “Variations in risk perceptions: a qualitative study on why unnecessary urinary catheter use continues to be problematic.” Research Questions & Hypothesis.Discussion: Research in nursing The research questions are: How aware are healthcare providers of risk, and how do they assess it? How do their awareness and assessments impact their decisions regarding patient safety initiatives? How do they associate risk with a specific medical device (Harrod, Kowalski, Saint, Forman, & Krein, 2013)? They did not state a hypothesis. However, the purpose of their study was to compare the use of the Bladder Bundle across hospitals with diverse levels of implementation success, and how the hospital providers defined and perceived risk in different contexts (Harrod et al., 2013). Sample, Size, & Attribute. The sample was healthcare providers working at Michigan hospitals that utilized the Bladder Bundle. The sample attribute and size was narrowed down in three phases, using maximum variation to 24 healthcare providers from 3 hospitals (Harrod et al., 2013). Setting. The setting of the study was initially telephone interviews, and then it was conducted onsite at a hospital in Michigan (Harrod et al., 2013). Findings. The researchers found that although some health care providers were aware of the increased risk of infection related to urinary catheters, different factors influenced how they QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE STUDIES 9 perceived the importance of removing the catheters promptly. For example, some providers stated that the use of Foley catheters is a basic nursing procedure, and consequently does not pose as much risk to the patient. They felt that the risk of the patient developing a CAUTI is not as significant as other infections (Harrod et al., 2013). Conclusion Nursing research can be conducted using quantitative and qualitative methods. A quantitative study on the quality of life of dementia patients was first summarized, followed by a summary of a qualitative study on hospital staff and urinary catheter infections. Both research methods can have successful outcomes and contribute tremendously to the continuous growth of nursing practice.
